Just 'Gotta' Buy Something! :-D

Published

OK, once in a while I'll get this "just 'gotta' buy something" feeling for nursing school....whenever it may be that I get in. :clown:

Here's my latest expenditure.

I paid about $30 for it.... I don't know if that's a bargain or not, but I liked it. lol Although it seems like I paid about $20 or $30 for my inexpensive stethoscopes (no bp cuff) about 10 or so years ago.

I figure I can practice on B/P's since I haven't taken one in several years (except a couple of times in A&P 2 this past summer.)

I also figure I will want a backup stethoscope, just in case my Littman gets stolen, broken, or lost. (No, I haven't bought my Littman yet.)

So, what have you purchased already, before you find (found) out that you were accepted?

I thought I was over doing it! I just got my acceptance letter and my cart from Allheart.com was like $206.97 I have a tote bag, littman scope, BP kit, watch, shoes, scissors, pocket organizer, and a clipboard with calculator so far. I'm still filling it up though. I also plan on getting that RNNotes small pocket book. I'm getting ideas from you guys. My husband said that I was buying too much but hey, I'm happy, I just want to be prepared. I had originally told him and my mom that if I was accepted I wanted him to buy my scope and her to buy my BP kit but since I've gotten the letter I said "I'll buy it myself" :nurse:

Oh heck, let them buy the PDA and the $100 shoes. :chuckle

Good luck in N.S.!!!

Talked to my mom today. She said not to buy the Littman until I graduate because she says that scopes and BP's walk off out of the blue if you aren't careful. She said that she'd buy them from the hospital where she works for me. But I want the littman. What if her scope and BP don't work with me?

Ok - I would like to know where the myth about steths walking off gets started - I know an awful lot of people who have lost cheap ones, but not a soul who has lost track of their Littman!!! just BUNK!!!!!!! BUY THAT SUCKER IF YOU WANT IT!

BTW - I still have the same Litt that I bought in Nursing school - it's time for a new one - the tubing is permanantly curved, the earpieces are mismatched and the logo on the diaphraghm is long gone. I'm hinting for graduation to my family to buy me another Cardio III - Sure I could replace the tubing and such - but...I want a new one :)

I kind of like the $500 electronic Littman. A nurse in my organic chem class told me today no way. First off, they "walk off" and secondly, I can get along just fine with a $50 one. But the electronic one looks so cute! If you get it engraved how can it walk off??

What can I say? :clown: I just love new toys. I also told my DH that I probably need the Palm Treo 650 phone since we may need PDAs. Might as well have a phone / internet / music / camera / PDA all in one!!

Unless they forcibly remove it from my neck, my pocket or my hands, it ain't walkin ANYWHERE!

If you have something in your possession 100% of the time, it probably won't 'walk off'.

Of course as in Gauge's case, many do not walk-off. However, there are thieves even in the medical field.

I personally will get a Littman, but I won't think I can trust everyone and just leave laying around somewhere.

(Stethoscopes, money, jewelry, PDA, textbooks, pens.....EVERYTHING.....has a chance of getting lost or stolen.)

IMHO! (Now, which color of Littman do I want?) :clown:

That's why I kind of like those hip clips for hanging the steth, but I'm wondering if they get in the way? There's other things that could make your steth less desireable by others - things like what stores do with their pens (tape a big flower to it!) Or those steth covers make them pretty obvious who it belongs to. I've also seen those steth id tags for peds people that are quite a bit bigger than regular ones and would make it more obvious if someone else used yours.

In medical assisting school, I marked my initials on my steth with a permanent marker. Of course, I always had it on me. It was a cheap one, so no biggie. I still have it.

With an expensive one, I will have my name engraved on it, use a steth ID tag & whatever else I have to do. :)

As the saying goes, "Locks are for honest people." ID tags, names engraved are only for the honest to return a misplaced item, dishonest people are the ones that we are worried about. :uhoh3:

I've seen the steth hip clips too & have wondered how easily the steth gets knocked off of them. I've always wore my steth around my neck, and never had a problem with it bothering me.

Would anyone happen to know where I could buy some fabric with nursing stuff on it? My neighbor is going to make me a tote for Nursing School and I would like it to have nursing stuff on it. Thanks a Bunch!
