by a parent who brought his child to school even though he vomited in the classroom yesterday. He was told yesterday that child was to stay home today and then LIED to the teachers that he was cleared by me. He is flat out refusing to pick him up. I have the full support of the administration. I also have a child in my office....

So, I'm thinking of creating a document parents would have to sign stating they are aware of the policy when they are picking up their kid. Anyone else have anything like that? Thanks!

Similar to what someone wrote, I would walk kids to the parent and say "Because your child vomited in school today, they will need to stay home tomorrow. I will let our attendance secretary know so that you do not need to call Snowflake in" and then I document "parent informed that student will need to stay home from school tomorrow and voices understanding."

In this incident it wouldn't have made a difference if the parent had signed a paper. Don't waste your time on the 99%, as Adobe mentioned, that will comply with the rules. The 1% will never comply. I get this a lot with the "perfect attendance" crowd.

See if your admin will allow the child to be counted as "absent," even though he/she is on the property but not eligible to attend classes according to school policy.

So glad we don't have perfect attendance awards.

Perfect Attendance makes me want to scream. Our school still does it and it makes me completely bonkers!!! I bluntly told my admins last year that I completely disagree with there being an award for perfect attendance. While it's great in theory to promote attendance, it also encourages otherwise sick kids to come to school when they should be home!

I had a FF in my office when another student came in and said he felt like he was going to throw up. He puked in my trash can and went back to class. The other student was in awe, he threw up, shouldn't he go home? I said, no, I just watched him guzzle a bunch of water at the water fountain after coming in from recess and was overheated. I just smiled at the look on his face.

Oh we give out a bicycles to those with perfect attendance for the whole 9 weeks. All names go into a drawing. So then parents are just as crazy as the kids, if not more. kid can be MISERABLE and parent will still send them.

Is this for mandated testing? We don't do it, so it doesn't affect us.

I really don't know the reasoning. We have a whole day dedicated to awards. Behavior awards (who didn't "clip-down" in which there are only one or two kids in the class who don't get an award-and don't even get me started on the clip system), subject awards (who scored above their goal on MAP testing), attendance. I'm not for "participation trophies" but I feel it's humiliating to those who don't get a single award when some of them are doing the very best they can.

i had a parade in here of kids that NEEDED to go home after lunch after they ate the tacos. Tainted beef? Doubtful. The other 500 kids that ate them were fine. 3 kids ended up getting their parents to pick them up. I guarantee all 3 will be in tomorrow. Math quiz averted. For today anyhow.

See we don't give out awards here, but some of my parents are STILL crazy about it. They rather send their child in to get sent home by me so that way it's not an absence.

I get this from the ones that know how to get around the attendance rules. If I send home kids - it is considered an excused absence.

My heart hurts for these kids whose parents don't want to pick them up or keep them home when sick.

I was that kid... it really sucks knowing that not even your mommy gives a rat's patootie about your well-being.

This is the one that will tug at my heart a bit. Kid is miserable, lets me know parent is aware of this and the fact that they were vomiting (many times) or had a significant temp (101+), etc. But that parent still made them come to school. I call home and parent tells me there is no one to pick up the student and can they just lay on my cot all day until they can take public transit home.

It is why I created a form parents can sign to allow their student to be dismissed on their own by me (if I deem them safe and able enough to do so) after I've talked to them on the phone. However, I do work with older students who do not have school buses and most get themselves to/from school on public transit. Do I hope they can be picked up? Yes. But I also know their bed is much better than my lumpy cot even if is a public bus ride there.

I've had quite a few kids call/email me when they go home so I can ensure they got there safely.
