Job shortage just for ADN or BSN as well?!

Published

I keep reading On Allnurses, about all the recently graduated nurses not finding jobs, etc... Most seem to have their ADN, Is this job shortage also true for graduate BSN?

Not to take anything away from people who worked their tail off to get an ADN, I was just wondering if getting a BSN over a ADN made a difference in the job hunt.

I already had an Associates degree in Criminal Justice, and did not want another associate degree. I wanted to get my bachelors degree, and I choose nursing. I live in the Midwest, and I am currently working on my BSN, this is a second career for me. I was curious what other people's thoughts were on the subject.

I think it depends on where you live. There is no problem finding a job in my area and theres like 10 nursing schools around. Almost all 72 classmates have found a job amd we just graduated in May. And 90% are in hospitals. We are ADNs

I start my ADN in Fall and will be getting my BSN as well. I have researched jobs in the area I am (Hampton Roads, Richmond) and most all of them say BSN preferred. I am planning on getting my CNA after my first semester and getting a job at the hospital I hope to work at so that I can have my foot in the door as an ADN while I am working on my BSN. I think the job shortage is for BSN as well, but you certainly have an advantage over ADNs, at least judging from what I have researched.

Where do you live?

Triangle..raleigh, NC..we have three major hospital and several other hospital in a 45 mile radius

Really depends on where you live. I live in central PA and from what I have heard, nobody is having issues around here either. Plus our local hospital is in the middle of a merger with a larger company out of Pittsburgh...there'll be more jobs created. I will graduate next May with my ADN and I'm not worried at all at the moment.

Again, depends on the location. All the hospitals around where I live are hiring ADNs. But, from this forum, I know that is not the case everywhere and in those places you are obviously better off getting a BSN.

I live in the metro St. Louis, MO area

I hope so @annachu512 because I'm planning on moving to PA soon from NJ!

The job market in jersey is very tough. I know ADN's who still don't have jobs as well as BSNs as well. I was told it is all about who you know. I was also told it is easier if you become some form of an employee at the facility you would like to work at such as a Nursing Assistant or tech. Because then you become an internal applicant. Just like everyone else, I truly hope I find a job when I am done school next June!!! Good luck to us all!!!

@edenk hey are in NJ?

Yea it is hard to get a job here in NJ as a new grad nurse ugh! Everywhere you look they want you to have experience and your like well if no one would hire me how can gain experience O_o Hopefully I can follow in the foot steps of the students before me in my program and find a job within a few months :fingerscrossed:

OP: The market in STL has been awful for at least the last two years, and has only gotten worse (both BSN and ADN grads) now that bjc isn't hiring, and has in fact started laying off employees. I graduated with a BSN in 2011 and applied for 50-60 jobs before moving 100 miles away for the only job offer I received. I wish you lots of luck.
