The economy stinks and new grads and other nurses are searching for employment.
What nursing job would YOU never do and why.....

I went into nursing 25 years ago with the idea of doing Peds.. after doing my pediatric rotation at Childrens Memorial Hospital I imagined my children had every disease known to man. Then I did my OB rotation which I had no interest in at that point. After witnessing my first birth I was in love and have dedicated my whole nursing career to this field of nursing.
What I would never, never to is Ortho, in school I had the nastiest instructor I have ever seen. After dealing with her I actually hated anything to do with Ortho.
As for OB docs. "A Doc, Is A Doc, Is a Doc" regardless of the area they work.
I would NOT do management. I just don't like that sort of thing. After almost 19 years of nursing, i still like bedside nursing. However, if i had to choose a type of bedside nursing i don't want to do.. it would be cardiac or oncology.... ughhhh.... I like surgery stuff or L&D..... I"d do cardiac and oncology if it meant not having a job at all.... but if I can choose, it wouldn't be those two things.... :)
Just curious...what is it about psych that is bad. I'm still a new nursing student so I was just wondering what goes on there.
Psych can be really mentally exhausting because you have to deal with so much unpredictable behavior. At least in other areas, things are usually what they seem, not so in psych. The pts are sick but the symptoms of their illness can be scary and or annoying. Some of them are manipulative and they seem to lie alot. You never can be sure they are telling the truth. They dont always respond to your kindness, (though some do) which can be very unfulfilling for nurses who tend to thrive on being nice. This is the worst part in my opinion. The chronic ones like schizophrenics are sad and the bipolar ones can be scary and unpredictable. You throw chemical abuse/dependency into the mix and it can really be a big mess. I think it is an extremely interesting area but not one that I would want to work in. Thankfully there are some exellent nurses out there who have the guts and mindset for it.

I think the only job that I absolutely would not want to do is management. I have been in this boat in the non-medical world and that is what drove me to nursing! One of the things that attracted me to nursing is the variety of options. I would never want to say never to any area of nursing, at least until I give it a try!
