Any hospital hiring new grads? anywhere in the country?
If you can stand the cold Western NY hospitals (Buffalo/Niagara Falls) are hiring new grads. Try Kaleida Health System, Catholic Health System, N.F. Memorial Medical Center and Erie County Medical Center. Most nursing homes will take new grads in this area of the country too. You may not get a day shift job but you should be able to find something.

How do I say goodbye? (long)
you hit the nail right on the head crocuta. even though i do not care for the current hospital's administration or my manager's style of management, i know this woman has a favorable opinion of me and i never know when i may need to use that to my advantage. btw the trauma center has been in negotiations recently to merge into a different healthcare system (i.e. new management). returning to the facility at a later date is a distinct possibility.

Being a patient where you work
at the hospital i am currently working at the charting is computerized and you cannot look at anyone's chart unless you are caring for them directly. i have heard of people being fired for unauthorized access. nurses can only view charts of the patients on their units all other charts are locked out. if you must access the chart of a patient who is not on your unit you have to contact the it dept. to get an override and you'd better have a darn good reason for it too.

How do I say goodbye? (long)
i'm not sure how i should go about resigning from my current job. i have been working for the last year or so at the local trauma center in a specially created student nurse position aimed at getting students to sign on after graduation. however, i have taken a position at another hospital. the main reason i chose the other hospital is the trauma center treats their nurses like crap and my manager is probably one of the worst managers i have ever had. she is nice but she does not know what she is doing. how can i diplomatically resign without burning my bridges? my manager has asked me several times about working there after graduation and i keep telling her that i'm thinking about it. i wouldn't mind working there in a year or two per diem, but i would not want to be a full or part timer. i do not want to go into an exit interview with her and say "i'm leaving because you suck". the pay at the two facilities is nearly the same and the trauma center has slightly better benefits. the only real difference is the hospital i chose treats their nurses with respect and you only have to work every third weekend (or less) as opposed to maybe every other weekend off at the trauma center. i don't know what to do, but i have to do something quick because i graduate friday.

NY has a shortage but I still don't have a job!!
I think once you take the refresher course you should be able to find a job pretty easily. I am from WNY too and as a new grad (as of this Friday) the recruiters have been chomping at the bit to hire us. Millard Fillmore Suburban is opening some new units and has been hiring a lot. The Catholic Health System and ECMC have been begging for nurses as well. There are plenty of nursing jobs to go around in WNY.

How much is your pay?
in western ny (buffalo, niagara falls area) new grads are getting about $21-$23/hr. nursing jobs here are fairly easy to come by as many young western new yorkers have decided to relocate after college. cost of living is pretty low so it's not too bad. you can still get a halfway decent house in the 'burbs for 100k or less in some areas.

Renal Diet Question.
my textbook says a pre-dialysis patient with a gfr between 15 and 60 should be restrict daily protein intake to 0.6-0.8 g/kg of body weight. however, it does not say what the protein intake of a patient on dialysis should be. i know it should increase and be high quality proteins with restricted dairy consumption, but how much should the protein intake be?

ERI Exit exam
we have eri at our school and we will be taking the exit exam. however, the test has no bearing on our course grade. we are being offered the eri nclex review course the week after we graduate, but it is optional.

There is no nursing shortage!
i am referring to nurses with active licenses. there are at least 10 nurses i can think of off the top of my head who are either too old or too sick to hold a job who have active licenses in my state. all they have to do is pay their renewal fee and they are considered active.

There is no nursing shortage!
i have seen some of the statistics on the number of nurses in the u.s. however, i wonder how many of those nurses are actually able to work as nurses. i know several nurses who have retired or are disabled and still maintain their licensure. i know there are many able bodied nurses who have walked away from nursing but, how do you differentiate them from the 90 year old retiree who hasn't worked in 25 years?

Info Needed about Nephrovite
does anyone know what nephrovite is exactly? i cannot find any information about it in my drug book. i am assuming it is an antianemic vitamin for renal patients but, i am not sure. if anyone could tell me the classification, action, and considerations or point me to a website where i can look it up i would appreciate it.

Do you wear rings at work?
i don't wear a ring during my clinicals but it makes me uncomfortable. when i graduate in two months (and have a real job), i plan on buying a plain gold band to wear to work. that way i will have no diamonds to lose and no germs to bring home.

How do you protect your identity?
that's a good idea about the passwords. i'll have to try that.

What??? No CNA's???
You're absolutely right. The only real reason I'm even considering this hospital is because I know this is the place where you get to see everything. However, I do not want to set myself up for a fall. I may try a per diem student position they have available but, I am begining to have some serious doubts about this facility.
