Job you would NEVER do in nursing....

Published

The economy stinks and new grads and other nurses are searching for employment.

What nursing job would YOU never do and why.....

otessa

Specializes in Internal medicine & urology.

Graduate from ADN program tomorrow. Won't do peds, L&D, psych. But with the job market the way it is, I should never say never. LOVE ICU!!!

I love med/surg... but I could never be a manager.

Circumcision is a personal choice, and I don't know too many men who care either way. I thank God everyday that I am.

Seems a very strange thing to thank god for on a daily basis.

Specializes in L&D/Maternity nursing.

Probably ICU or surgery. Which is weird because I actually enjoyed my experiences in these areas when in clinical. However, I like to talk with patients and you don't really get that opportunity to do that in these settings as much as I'd like to.

I definitely don't think I could do psych. I am just not comfortable with my skills there. I had a great experience during my clinical rotation and it really opened my eyes and check my biases, and really appreciate these individuals struggles, but there is just so much extra in that area that you have to be careful with, so many boundaries and just such a high rate of burnout that I've seen in any rotation thus far. The team's I worked with were so dysfunctional and I felt like they needed to be diagnosed more than the patients half the time. I just left me feeling very discouraged.

That said, I love love love OB/L&D. So I will gladly relieve most of you all from that burden!:D

Specializes in M/S, MICU, CVICU, SICU, ER, Trauma, NICU.

Peds Oncology.

Just shoot me if that is the only thing left in this world. I'll have to be medicated--I love kids too much and I'll never be effective as I lay on the ground a total, crying heap of a mess.

Ugh.

Specializes in Acute care, Community Med, SANE, ASC.

Enterostomal therapy nurse. I can deal with some wounds but doing it day after day, all day--no way.

Specializes in None.

Well I am still a student, but as of now I have a severe distaste for OB and Burns...But since economy is crap, when I graduate I will take a job where I can get.....hopefully it isnt one of those two.....*sighs*

Specializes in Orthopedics.

Well never say never but.....I really can't stand the OR or ICU. But I like change a lot so who knows.

Any homecare job that requires you to drive from case to case.

I live in Honolulu, with some of the worst traffic in the nation.

Are you so COMPLETELY devoid of compassion? I doubt that most "depressives" are asking to be, do they really deserve a backhand from you or anyone else? Do you really believe that you will not encounter psychiatric patients, whether diagnosed or not, no matter what area of nursing you work in? It might be a good idea to reexamine your career choice if you find depressed people that repugnant. :angryfire

Whoa, easy there. I agree psych patients can be trying. And more than anything drug and alcohol. I want to say LIFE IS STRESSFUL, just CUT IT OUT! But I know it is like anything else, they can't help it. The person who posted just made an off the cuff remark. We are discussing things we would not want to do. Can't we keep it light?

As I read throught hese postings I realize what a diverse bunch we are!

Thanks goodness we all have preferences and rarely a refusal of an area.

We keep the units covered. Personally I do both psych nursing at one job and correctional medicine at my second job. Just a note for those who think they would prefer to not be in psych remember this... There is NO area of nursing that psych does not apply! I'm not recruiting but rather complimenting all of us for the compassion and skill we bring to those we serve. Can't say never but I can tell you I will avoid bariatric nursing for the rest of my career. No particular reason, I just feel like I belong in prison and psychiatric facilities! :D Many that know me agree...

Thank you to all who dislike psych and OB. You give me job security. I could also see myself doing peds (even oncology), burns and correctional. How's that for an eclectic mix.

Don't have the stamina or the physique to handle ortho or heavy-duty med/surg anymore, especially if we're talking 12-hour shifts. Not crazy about LTC.

Can't imagine doing OR. Standing in one place for more than a few minutes gives me body aches and makes me want to scream.

I'm glad we have such a wide range of interests and skills. As they say, there's a lid for every pot.
