Working the Burn Unit....the pain, and torture these people go thru...psych,OB, and peds....I have worked Med Surg adults, some hospice, and ER.

I have tried clinic work and just hated it. Complain, Nag, Complain, Nag on and on and on for days. I was to the point of saying, O My God enough already, I hear you stop Complaining.

Peds trauma. so many peds traumas are preventable. use seatbelts, helmets, safety precautions. and those SNATS just drive me CRAZY, as someone said..."i'd have to go hunting":angryfire

I always said I would never work in a prison. Oops! Best job I have ever had in nursing.

Specializes in progressive care telemetry.

OR, OB, oncology, ortho, psych

Pretty much anything that starts with an O or a P. :D

Peds ICU or Peds Oncology. I love kids, but sick ones rip my heart out and make me doubt that there is a God. I would go insane. GI lab would stink too- literally +] ;->

I could do any nursing in the hospital, however, psych and ER are my favorite!! I could not do insurance companies...I think they are the devil!!

I love that nurses have the flexibility to change without change careers!! :yeah::yeah::yeah:

Thought for sure I would want to be an L&D nurse while I was in school. My OB rotation (with a certifiable instructor) cured me of any such desire ever.

I also thought I would want to work hospice, and I still would love to work with that population (except I really love what I'm doing now). Problem is, my emotions are so out of control with dying patients that I feel the focus is on me and not them.

I've always dealt poorly with psych cases (because they are in every field of nursing). I couldn't focus solely on that. Now I do have to deal with difficult parents, but they generally don't visit for more than 1-2 hours a shift. One think I love about newborns, no manipulation, no ulterior motives. They don't fake pain and the only ones that cry for attention are older and in truth, it is one of their biological needs to be held and nurtured by other humans.

Funny, I saw someone post earlier how they didn't want to work peds/NICU because they couldn't take the whining and the crying. I thought to myself, that's why I didn't want to work psych or OB!!

Specializes in School Nurse, Maternal Newborn.
Psych. Psych patients (esp depressives) give me this almost overwhelming urge to backhand someone and that's probably not very therapeutic. ;)

Are you so COMPLETELY devoid of compassion? I doubt that most "depressives" are asking to be, do they really deserve a backhand from you or anyone else? Do you really believe that you will not encounter psychiatric patients, whether diagnosed or not, no matter what area of nursing you work in? It might be a good idea to reexamine your career choice if you find depressed people that repugnant. :angryfire

I have considered human nursing on and off for years. I figure that I'll just stick with the animals as a technician. Most seem to appreciate my help as do their owners. We have our share of trauma and drama but with a lot less paper work and regulations.

Fuzzy

Peds I cannot take to see children in pain. I could never do this type of work.

Just curious...what is it about psych that is bad. I'm still a new nursing student so I was just wondering what goes on there.
