OB..babies scare me.

I dont like wound care...our local hospital has a wound care center and wound care nurses...I dont mind caring for wounds my patients have but to sit in the wound center and do nothing but care for wounds all day...I did a rotation in nursing school and it was the first thing I ever participated in that made me feel ill...Other than that bring it on! I love Peds and OB Great thread!

There is something about neuro I really don't like. The things I do know that I dislike about neuro is that there are a lot of young-ish people who are never going to be the same which is really frustrating and sad to me. I also have trouble comprehending the pathpysiology of the brain.

The second area I'm really not interested in working is pysch or chem dep. With chem dep I am afraid that I won't be able to go in and treat the patient without any biases. With psych as someone else put it there isn't anything concrete to treat.

One of the most valuable things I learned in my Psych rotation was something my instructor told us the first day. She said one of the most important things as students/new practitioners in psych was to first assess our own feelings and attitudes about the practice of psychiatry and psych patients. For some, simply recognizing our negativity or fears regarding such things is enough to modify our attitudes and enable us to be therapeutic with patients. I believe this can be applied to many of the fields that are coming up frequently in this thread.

Never again with med surg.

just a thought...

many elderly gentlemen that have not been circumcised have a heck of a time with infection, bleeding, etc from the improper care of the foreskin. (go ahead and try to pull it back, ouch!)

on the other hand, i witnessed a circumcision in nursing school, and had to leave the room because i was guilty of having it done to both my boys...facts of life..

back to your question, you would have to drag me kicking and screaming back to med/surg. i gave up after 9 months...

signed, happy rn in ltc

circumcision is usually, for many people, a cultural practice. in my culture it's practiced as a rite of passage signifying transition from boyhood to manhood. boys are circumcised as teenagers, between the age of 13-16 years. however, some people are moving towards circumcising their boys at birth.

i'm with you on the benefits of circumcision. in fact, imo the benefits outweigh the risk.

1) scientifically proven that circumcision reduces the risk of hiv, hpv, syphilis etc. research this.

2) hygiene. i've catheterized a bunch of uncircumcised men and their memberes are always a hot mess. eeeewwwww! all that dirt around the skin increases the risk for uti's. personally, i cannot stand the look of all that foreskin.

CNA. It's all nursing stuff, and the back-breaking side of it.

I work in a level 1 pediatric ER, and couldn't imagine working on anyone over the age of 20. So, I would never work with adults or a medsurg floor in peds.

Specializes in I spent 21 years in OB.

If you wouldn't work in any of these areas: where would you work or where do you work?

I would not work in an abortion clinic, oncology is too depressing, ortho, and even though I loved working as a nurses aide in LTC several years ago, when I was in nursing school more recently, I observed a woman sitting in a TV room looking toward the TV, but not watching it. I could see her mind was on something that made her sad due to the very sad expression on her face. I then put myself in her place, and instantly knew I didn't want to work in a nursing home. Those poor souls are hauled around in shower chairs after receiving cathartics the noc before, and they have BMs on the floor that I am sure humiliate many of them, some are left in bed, and allowed to lay in their bodily excretions until another shift due to the lack of staffing, and no thank you. I don't want to see those poor souls mistreated. After all, some of them led very productive and successful lives. This is the reason I chose to die at home.
