PEDs, not that I dont like the kiddos or the familys, I work in the ED and always feel like I want to bite the chubby legs or chubby necks, if this was my primary job I dont know how long I would be able to hold out :-)

(seriously too, I was holding a head to help PA with stitches and kept getting the urge to eat this cutie up LOL could you imagine what the parents would say)

LOL. This is so funny. I dont work with kids anymore but sometimes I feel the same way when I see a cute baby. I get so fixated on how cute they are that I feel like the parents might think I'm a wierdo or something so I try to hold back. I just want to play with them but that would be wierd because I dont even know them! You can't go nibbling on other people's baby's.

Specializes in Cardiac, Oncology, Holistic Nursing.

nurselovejoy - i'm with you! all the same areas i would avoid.

I love the idea that in nursing you can change "jobs" (eg. units) and it's a positive, not a negative. I will work just about anywhere but I'm not as happy in psych nursing. It's been enlightning to read some of these posts as to peoples likes and dislikes. I didn't even think of working at a burn unit - but I'd be willing to try it.

Specializes in NICU.
I would NEVER work in OB. I'm against circumcision, formula and inducing for no medical reason. Stealing this answer from someone else....I wouldn't deal with abortions either.

I work in the NICU, I love it and even though I personally don't want my kids to get formula or circ'd, I still love my job. In nursing, you have to put your own personal preferences aside and remember that this is a free country. I wouldn't let my own child starve if I didn't have enough breastmilk of my own. Yes, there are milk banks out there, but sometimes even those can take a while to arrive!

A baby who needs to be fed every two hours can't wait for milk to be overnighted to your home! Really going to start an IV on your own baby and wait for milk to arrive?

As far as inductions, elective c-sections, elective inductions for no reason other than convenience pi$$ me off, but again it's not my job to tell a woman in labor what she SHOULD do. I can only educate her on the risk that a doctor may NOT have talked about. To each their own. A professional RN knows when to put their own biases aside.

With that being said, I could never work in the adult world except for working with L&D patients. I'm in the NICU now and I don't see myself anywhere else!!

Specializes in NICU, School Nursing, & Community Health.

ER! Boy, I have all the respect in the world for you ER nurses!

I had to go to the ER last week- having major back pain, vomiting, diaphoretic, couldn't urinate. Anyways, turns out I had a kidney stone. I sat in the waiting room for 2 hours with people who were laughing and playing around. Seriously, can you be that sick if you're laughing, stuffing your face with chips, or joking with your buddy on your cell phone? I don't know how you ER nurses put up with all the people who use the ER for any run of the mill ailment. My hat's off to you all!

Specializes in lots of different areas.

Just a thought...

Many elderly gentlemen that have not been circumcised have a heck of a time with infection, bleeding, etc from the improper care of the foreskin. (go ahead and try to pull it back, ouch!)

On the other hand, I witnessed a circumcision in nursing school, and had to leave the room because I was guilty of having it done to both my boys...Facts of life..

Back to your question, you would have to drag me kicking and screaming back to med/surg. I gave up after 9 months...

Signed, Happy RN in LTC

I couldnt work Peds, OB/GYN, or Psych, although most of my pts have underlying psych issues anyways.

I never thought I would like ER, but did a rotation for my new grad residency program and fell in love with it!

I love working ICU! Give me a crashing pt that I can keep from circling the drain anytime or a trauma pt and I'm in heaven!

i can't say never...'cause you never know....

...but i think i would have a really, really hard time with the suffering and dying of children with cancer. i am thankful there are nurses who are good at peds oncology! on the flip side, i bet the children's joys and triumphs would be infinitely rewarding...& maybe that would help ease the sorrows...

Specializes in scrub tech 3 year, Circulator 2 years.

I dont want to be L and D or Peds. Child psych maybe but not adult. Surgery is my home and hopefully I'll always be able to stay there..

I know what you mean! When I see those little chubby legs and arms and those sweet faces it takes me back. I just want to eat them up! My kids are older and not at all cute anymore (preteen/teen). I don't look at babies too closely, the parents would think I'm a perv. In reality, it just brings me back to the happiest years of my life!

Mental health/psych...it scares me! I also like bedside nursing and all of the "technical" skills that come with nursing...I don't like being someone's therapist.
