ixchel's 8/15 This Week I Have Learned...

Published

I have learned that I seem to be the "Go To" when my AN friends are butt tired and need a post posted...and I like that.

I've learned that I miss the girls (and guy) on the School Nurse Forum.

I've learned that tomatoes are hardy.

I've learned that tears help sometimes.

I've learned that my mom is one of the strongest people I know.

Hmmm, I haven't learned much, but the week is still young.

I'm sure ixchel will check in. No worries. In the meantime...What have you learned this week?

Unfortunately you did and it has and I'm guessing the poster has been banned. It was a guy who just LOVES people and wants to be a nurse because he LOVES people. When it was politely suggested he shadow a nurse to get an idea of what nursing is really like he went absolutely bat-poo crazy. Apparently he doesn't LOVE people as much as he said. I don't think I have seen as many TOS violations in 4 posts as this guy accomplished. It was epic.

Oh boo! :( That sounds like fun & I missed it.

We've had some very unique individuals with.. interesting POVs recently. At least it gives me something semi-entertaining to read before classes start.

Thank you for clarifying the hemoglobin issue! That helps!

do you know if Thallasemia is more life threatening than sickle cell? I know that Sickle cell trait carriers can be asymptomatic and athletes.

Sorry to hijack... I've been researching this online for a friend of my adult child's. NCAA now requires all athletes be tested. And a young woman with the trait - she never knew she had - has been verbally told she may not be able to participate in sports.

But NCAA guidelines clearly state sickle cell testing does not bar someone from playing.

So I'm wondering how thalassemia fits in.

Even if you or someone could point me to the correct Google search terms so I could look up more information...

From Codina Leik's "Family Nurse Practitioner Certification and Intensive Review"

"Thallensemia Minor or Trait: A genetic disorder in which the bone marrow produces abnormal hemoglobin (defective alpha or beta globin chains). Normal hemoglobin contains two alpha and two beta chains. Results in mircrocytic/microchromic anemia."

There are both alpha and beta types of thallesemia.

"ethnic groups: mediterranean, North African, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asians...vast majority are asymptomatic...discovered incidentally because of abnormal CBC results."

Thallesemia minor usually doesn't require treatment. Most people with Thallesemia major are stillborn. Those who do survive can prolong their lives with regular blood transfusions, folate therapy, and chelation therapy to pull off the extra iron. There's more detailed info in the link below.

NIH link:

Thalassemia: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

"Sickle Cell Anemia: A genetic hemolytic anemia...many forms ranging from sickle cell trait to various forms of full-blown disease...higher risk of death from infection with encapsulated bacteria due to hyposplenia...higher prevalence in people from Africa, the Mediterranean, the middle east, and some areas of India..."

Thalassemia: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

Also, fun fact, those with sickle cell have a natural increased resistance to malaria. Go evolution! Or God! Whatever your views are.

To answer your question about which one has the better prognosis...that would depend on the severity of your friend's type of disease since both forms can be mild or quite severe.

What I have learned this week:

- Hastily and quickly washing a sharp pair of kitchen shears on 4 hours of sleep maybe isn't the best idea. At least my steri strips are holding up and there aren't any signs of infection! Stitches, smitches!

- Starting my day off with a quick run or some yoga (even if I'm cranky and sore and exhausted and really don't want to) does wonders for my mood for the rest of the day.

- Studying 6-8 hours a day in preparation for my FNP cert exam might just help someone out on AN!

I also learned that I can't believe so many people hate olives. I LOVE THEM! Green ones and black ones. Heck, I could eat a whole jar of green ones in one sitting! Lol!

Rats! I've got to get better at being an insomniac.

I'm making a new rule. Whomever witnesses the crazy must screen shot for others j/k.

Awesome thread in the making. I got in 1 reply that I thought was constructive and non-snarky, was going back for more and pfffft, thread gone like kaiser soyze. Dude had some issues.

Today I learned that I need to check my phone before drinking a **** ton of coffee, doing my hair and makeup, then driving an hour to work. "Wheres my name on the assignment.... oh no, am I floating again? What? I was cancelled?!"

I learned another thing today....when you're 3 posts away from breaking 2000 you will find you have nothing to say on ANY of the threads!!!!

I learned that when recipes say prep time is x amount of minutes, that only relates to those who actually can cook. Quinoa cheesy bread is my attempt for the day. Hopefully, it'll turn out better than the sweet potato fries I tried making last week. I had to throw away about 50% because they were burnt to a crisp. Literally.
