It's all about who you know!

Published

I know that "who you know" will get you a job in any industry. Today we welcomed a new grad RN who was working at our hospital as an aide - great!!! The only thing that we did not like about her was that she was a stock up young girl who was telling us for two years that as soon as she's done with nursing school she will have her pick at any unit she wants to because she was told by the mngt.she is one of the best aides we have ( we all were laughing) because she was the worst. Well, today there she was....RN in orientation. I just feel so dissapointed because it is so hard if not impossible for many talented and smart new grads to find a job and some of the wonderfull aides who did fantastic job with our patients but never got the chance to even interview, one got hired who's short on common sense.... . I bet she knows someone higher up in our hospital ( we'll find out soon). I do wish her best of luck on her new adventure and she may turn out to be a wonderful nurse, I just wish that other new grads had an equal chance to interview, O and did I mention she got the full time day shift and christmass off..., agrrrrr I just wish I had an aunt or fairy Godmother in menagement.

Back in the day it was known as nepotism - today it's called networking. No hate:saint:

como se dice spellcheck lol

Grammar too, all over the place (not just OP) :lol2:

"oh!! I thought all new grad RNs could only work night shifts to start?"

Definitely not the story here. New grads can apply for & get any shift being offered for Residency.

Stop being jealous and blaming other people. Just because it was not ordained from above for you to get the job, does not mean everyone else who got jobs had relatives or people they know. Maybe you are JUST unlucky person. Someone has to win and someone has to lose, always.. so,, maybe it has nothing to do with who you know, its just how lucky you are...

think about it? and STOP complamning.

Just curious, but who were you directing this too? The OP didn't complain that they didnt' get a job, they complained that a poorly performing NA got a new grad RN position over the possibility of better applicants. The OP already has a job.

nepotism and networking ARE NOT the same thing......i dont have a problem with "help" getting the interview, but it needs to stop there. Nepotism is when they get hired without thought of qualification, because of who they know. Networking is being able to find the openings that might not be made "public".

stop complamning.

People have every right to complain, vent, gripe, disagree, comment, and share their feelings on this forum. So, no, the OP does not necessarily need to stop complaining. After all, she has found employment, so her post was less of a complaint and more of a healthy vent.

frankly, with the high gamble of finding a job, high debt for school, abuse by instructors, i haven't recommended nursing to anyone; especially these past few years when the economy has plummeted. but it has to turn around at some point and i truly wish you all the best.

because we all know those philosophy majors with the non-abusive professors just have job offers rolling in, or better yet, the people that didn't go to college at all.

Two words: Instant Karma. If she does a poor job as an RN, then she'll be pantsed soon enough.

Isn't it the goal in the job search to get the interview. The interview is the last step in the hiring process. All one has to do, is present themselves as one who can "play well with others." I think you have missed the point of the discussion. Many candidates are simply passed up( meaning their applications are not even reviewed), without even their education and qualifications being viewed in a serious fashion, due to the fact they don't know a key individual. Isn't that a shame! It certainly makes the HR department's job easier: Just scroll down to the question on the application: "Do you have family or friends that work here?" Also, what makes these "networking" individuals so special that they receive information on "private" job openings? Private job openings?

So, if the OP knew some manager or "higher up" at the hospital she is trying to get on at, she would not speak to them about finding a job?

I'm truly not trying to start a flame war here, but I have a hard time believing that anyone wouldn't use every possible resource to find a job--especially in this economy. Stand on that principle if you like, but I plan on doing all the networking I can while in NS to give myself an advantage.

Like someone else said, if this new RN can't cut it, I'm sure she won't last anyway.

I have clicked the button that says I know or am related to someone at the facility, and it has NEVER gotten me a phone call.
