I know that "who you know" will get you a job in any industry. Today we welcomed a new grad RN who was working at our hospital as an aide - great!!! The only thing that we did not like about her was that she was a stock up young girl who was telling us for two years that as soon as she's done with nursing school she will have her pick at any unit she wants to because she was told by the mngt.she is one of the best aides we have ( we all were laughing) because she was the worst. Well, today there she was....RN in orientation. I just feel so dissapointed because it is so hard if not impossible for many talented and smart new grads to find a job and some of the wonderfull aides who did fantastic job with our patients but never got the chance to even interview, one got hired who's short on common sense.... . I bet she knows someone higher up in our hospital ( we'll find out soon). I do wish her best of luck on her new adventure and she may turn out to be a wonderful nurse, I just wish that other new grads had an equal chance to interview, O and did I mention she got the full time day shift and christmass off..., agrrrrr I just wish I had an aunt or fairy Godmother in menagement.
OP just be happy for her. Tell the other future nurses to become aides and be the best aides they can be just in case they may be offered a nursing position in the future. I have gotten jobs from knowing people. The management that I knew saw that I was a good hardworking , and honest person.
stop being jealous and blaming other people.just because it was not ordained from above for you to get the job, does not mean everyone else who got jobs had relatives or people they know.
read the post again. the op never stated that she was competing with this new rn for "the job" as you say.
maybe you are just unlucky person.
why on earth would you even write this? why is the op unlucky?
someone has to win and someone has to lose, always.. so,, maybe it has nothing to do with who you know, its just how lucky you are...
i would rather believe that a combination of skill and who you know has more to do with being hired than luck.
think about it? and stop complamning.

To all that I have offended with my spelling and grammar - I'm sorry. Not to make any excuses but English is my second language (Spanish is not my first) and I was not even thinking about it, now I'm embarrassed and I apologize.
In response to my post: I did not mean to come across as jealous, vindictive or vicious. I was simply frustrated with the system more than the particular Rn. As I mentioned before, I do wish her all the luck and hope that she will become a wonderful nurse, better than when she was an aide. It was just a vent. Thank you all for caring enough to post a reply, it's nice to know that someone gives two cents about what I have to say.
I kind of feel both ways about this subject. I am currently in nursing school, and I just left my CNA job in another city so I could go get my BSN. I feel like if I ever wanted to apply back at the hospital where I was a CNA, I would probably have a better shot at it than other new graduates. I can see how this wouldn't be fair in some ways, because goodness knows there will be better new graduate nurses out there than me. But on the other hand, I really appreciate a hospital that would show that kind of loyalty to its employees and support them in such a way that allows them to get an education without worrying (as many GNs do) that they won't be employed after graduation. Plus, hiring from within means that the hospital knows that their hire will work cohesively with the other nurses and less of an orientation to the hospital is necessary.
I think the thing here that makes me agree with you, though, is that all the nurses think this person is a terrible tech. The hiring people probably should have spoken with some nurses to see if this person would be a good addition to your team.
