Is it possible for a 23 year old woman with no kids and still in shape to work five 12 hours days?

Yes, even though most of us at my hospital do it, it is exhausting! I dont really mind four days, but the five is very tiring. I just dont know how the rn's I work with do it! Many of them are over 40, not that it is old, and work five twelve hour days and only two days per week off, and usually not even two days off in a row!! One rn worked six days and when they started putting her on call she went prn somewhere else to keep up that six 12 hr per week . I am really considering telling boss that I would like to work three one week and then four the next. If we dont tell him, he automatically schedules us for five each week!!

I worked with two nurses who worked full time (3 12s) at one job and PT (2 12s) at another. Both bosses fine with the arrangement and were flexible with schedule. Both that I am thinking of had kids and their husbands were stay at home dads. Makes sense if you can tough it out. I don't think you would be allowed to do 60 hrs a week in one place though.

Possible? Yes.
Prudent? Very debatable.

Possible, yes. Wise, no. I work five 9 hr days a week and it's tiring. But I had to get out of LTC misery.

Of course, I am 30 and work 5-6 twelve's a week. It can get tough but I have become accustomed to it. You will live

I am barely fit to scratch my own butt after three in a row. I can't even imagine what five would do to me.

Thankfully, my unit does a great job of making sure no nurse works more than three 12-hour shifts in a row (at least on the unit), if they choose to float overtime to another floor or another hospital, that's on the nurse. Love where I work.

Back when I was younger...45ish, I worked at least 3 sixteen hour shifts and 2 eight hour shifts in the same week for a few months. I can't recommend it for a good quality of life, but it certainly is doable.

If I did not have a family, I'd do it in a heart beat. I've always loved working a lot of hours; it's very motivating for me and it quells my restlessness.
