I used to be a cna and despite all the ******** that came along with it I really enjoyed it. I am about to finish six years of very intense military service and i have deicided to become a nurse. I have been reading every thread i can on this site and nothing yet has disuaded me excpet one thing. that is the paralells nursing has with the military and that seems to be a petty, vinidictive world run by people who never realized their own potential and want you to feel their pain. Is this an accurate view of nursing?

Not my type of nursing.
I see this type of behavior as commonplace in the WORLD...but heaven help the people I work with should they decide to become like this.
I have a GREAT group of people I work with and I am blessed.
That is like everything else....

Nursing itself is wonderful. I wouldn't generalize as you did in your OP. There are certain work enviroments that are hostile, but not all places. Once again we come on here to vent so you may not have the best idea of nursing until you experience it. And you just may love it !

"Is nursing a sick , petty , vindictive world?" Yes, yes, and yes; however, the world as a whole is this way, so do not let that alone keep you out of nursing.

I've worked at some very supportive units, where everyone worked together, and a few that were just terrible. But I always tried to give the best possible care no matter what, and the patients, in general (95%) were appreciative.
GO FOR IT !

I would say most of the time no, nursing is not a sick, petty, vindictive world. i've been an nurse 32+ years and held 9 jobs during that time. Most of my jobs were wonderful and fulfilling. Two in particular were a waking nightmare and I didn't stay long at either one. Nursing is a very hard job. If you are coming out of the military you will probably do very well with nursing school. You have to be really organized and manage your time extremely well to be successful in nursing school and that transfers to the job market, too.
If you really want to be a nurse don't let anecdotal information dissuade you from your goal. A lot of nurses come here to vent about a very difficult, demanding job but that doesn't mean they don't still love it. And if they really don't love it they ought to jump ship and get another line of work and quit making life hard on the rest of us.

well, I was going to say NO, because I work with a great group of nurses. Jerk nurses are just the ones that get mentioned on here because everyone needs a place to vent.
Then I saw this post and it seems a little...petty. (not that I don't agree with the use of spell check! it is indeed a friend)

In the military we always hear "thank you for your service" . but i would like to thank all you for your service. I would also like to thank the people who were positive with their responses . I really love this forum. You people are great. Thank you very much. Love and more love to you all. The nursing world needs love right?

Nursing in itself is not a sick, petty or vindictive world. Sometimes you may encounter people who have those attributes, but that is true of any career. Best of luck to you.
