Is it legal for your boss to dictate where you poop?

As in, there are two employee restrooms, and the boss has requested that if you're going to poop, you should use the restroom in the "dirty utility area" because of odor. And if you DO poop in the non-poop bathroom, you'll be "talked to."

Asking for a friend.

I don't know how you can work as a health care provider and be that bothered by smells. What do these people do,when heaven forbid a patient is incontinent? Vomit and GI bleeders smell really bad also. To say nothing of plain bad breath and body odors!

Yes! My previous employer had signs up on the bathroom doors in the nurses' stations. Doctors would stop by to "drop their patients off" and ...just ...yikes! There are better, more isolated, choices for those kinds of science experiments.

Those few words of Sour Lemon's reminded me of a story:

One of the psychiatrists was in the GeroPsych nurses station and said he badly needed to use the restroom. We informed him the staff restroom was closed for repairs. Staff, in the meantime, was using the locked seclusion bathroom next to the nurses station that was behind two locked doors.

I went to unlock the doors and was fumbling with the keys when the psychiatrist said,"Hurry up, Dave or I'm going to be incontinent!"

Lots of nurses who do home care state that they will not poop in the patient's home. It can be an uncomfortable event.

I hope none of those nurses have ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome or had a bad taco for lunch.

Whatever. I generally ignore "rules" that cannot be enforced. I shall poop where I please. If confronted, I will deny it to my death. The manager can't prove anything, unless I clog the toilet. I wonder if you are eligible for unemployment benefits for unsubstantiated pooping.

Practically-speaking, it is a reasonable request. It's the idea of policing it and having that conversation that is weird-o.

"Ashley, could you step into my office for a minute? Um, I saw you leaving the area earlier this morning, and right before that I heard the toilet flush. Three times. Was...is there anything you want to tell me?"

Anyway, at work? Never. NEVER. Yeah, it's possible Freud would have a field day...

??

"Can you please sign this write up please? You dumped one in the wrong toilet, we've been keeping watch and timing how long each person was in the bathroom." They would have to keep watch at all times because even if someone comes out and the hallway reeks the person in there before them could be the real culprit..god forbid someone being falsely accused!

Specializes in New Grad 2020.

I did an Oncology clinical last year that required everyone to poop in a certain bathroom that is located almost off the floor near the elevators

The bathroom on the actual floor was for "everything else"

I thought it was weird as hell but I was the guest and a student so I do whatever I am told lol

Specializes in Case Manager/Administrator.

I am laughing so hard right now. As a manager I never dictated where anyone could poo but I did make them leave the area smelling febreez fresh/match stick fresh.

I have twin boys who well decided to see if they could light on fire after letting go....one ended up in the emergency room where I worked...I got a donut for Christmas form the staff for my children. too funny.

I used to work with a CNA who literally would clock out and go HOME (2 blocks away) to poop.

Did this remind anyone else of American Pie?

As far as the OP goes, what if someone is in the poop bathroom and you have diarrhea? I think this could questionably be a violation of the ADA if there are any nurses with Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, IBS-D or any other illnesses that would warrant unrestricted access to a bathroom.
