Hey fellow school nurses,
Just curious if students/teachers have been diagnosed with the flu and how you've handled it with other parents/staff. I've had a bunch of kids whose parents have diagnosed them with the flu but that's not exactly the same thing
!
I haven't seen or heard of any confirmed cases yet, but there have been confirmed deaths from influenza in my state. We (the other nurses in my district) put some general information on our district web page about influenza, hand/cough hygiene, when to call the doctor, and when to keep kids home. We would not do notifications to parents unless the state CDC told us we should.
We've had a bunch of confirmed cases. They've been watching the attendance closely, but our district is pretty large, so it would take a significant number to close us down. Last week, they did close 2 other districts in our county. I had a busy, hard day yesterday and last Thursday.. but today(knock on wood) has been fairly calm.
So far, knock on wood, relatively little flu. I put hand washing flyers all over the school, the web, and added a blurb to the am announcements as a reminder. Strep...whole other story. Tons of it. Already had the school deep cleaned last weekend. Temp check everyone who walks through the door.

We have had a lot of confirmed cases, throughout all 4 of my schools. I don't send notifications- the mass hysteria that follows is just not worth it, especially when Flu outbreak is all over the news. It's flu season and it is out there.
