Is this your first career choice?

Hello! I've been lurking around here for awhile and decided to post since it's my birthday!

Anyway, I was just wondering for how many people this is their first career choice, but if not, what are you doing now? I was a physical therapist assistant for 11 years before I got laid off because they rehauled Medicare. Right now I'm a medical transcriptionist and have been for almost 5 years. I'm currently applying for acceptance into an ADN program to begin in the fall of 2004. I have to take A&P II again since it's been longer than 6 years when I took it for my AAS degree for physical therapy. I think you really have to have a calling to be a nurse. What I have learned in my 38 years on this Earth is that it isn't necessarily hard to TELL people what you want but DECIDE what you want.

Have a great day!:balloons:

happy birthday

i think if you feel called you should answer.

i worked many jobs before becoming a nurse, i started an lvn program @ age 31 slowly worked torward my adn and am now working just as slowly toward my bsn. enjoy your time. there are many threads on this site with opinions about starting a nursaing career.

here is a very current thread that started because a great member posted a link to an article about nursing dissatisfaction. you can also search for thing like nursing satisfaction. here is one more i just remembered

there is also an acutal board for would you recommend nursing as a career.

LOL! I can relate to that. I'm always chiding myself for being nearly 27 years old and still not sure what I want to be "when I grow up."

For now, I'm a pre-nursing major, but I still have my moments of doubt.

I haven't had so many careers, but I've changed my major an abundance of times - from engineering (mechanical, then biomed) to elementary education to bio/pre-med to radiologic tech and now to nursing.

Hope you have a very, very happy day! :)

No. I'm 30, so have had a few different "careers" before finding myself here. Currently I'm an herbalist, and I plan to continue with my herbal business even after becoming an RN.

Happy Birthday!

I got my first degree in Psychology with the demented dream of being a shrink. That didn't last long at all after I got a job working for the county. I quit 5 months later.

Got a job as a technical librarian with a cargo airline after that & worked there for 3+ years. Then I moved to CA and worked as an office manager for 2+ years.

Currently, I'm back in OH and working as an office manager for a shop while I got to school.

Happy birthday!!:balloons: I'm a medical transcriptionist too, have been for 15 years. Nursing has been a life long goal for me, I plan to work part time nursing when I graduate and still do the transcription at home on the side, it's almost like a crutch for me and very, very familiar so I don't want to quite give it up.

this has always been a goal for me, but when I graduated high school, I was talked out of it due to the high number of lay offs that were going on in CA at the time. On top of that my advisor thought it would be in my best intrest to do some thing that I excel in.

Well, that didn't work so let's just say I'm starting over again and fine with it!!!

Good luck and welcome to the BB

Yep! I've ALWAYS wanted to be a nurse. I was married at 20 though and my husband was in the military so we've moved all over the place. Now that we are staying in one place long enough, I'm finally pursuing my dream. I'm 30 and am attending my 6th college.

Working since i was 14, have had plenty of different jobs. I have my Cosmetology license, loved school, but i would have had to go to a more populated area to make a career out of it that i could feed myself with.

Decided when i was 16 that i wanted to be a nurse, to eventually teach A and P. A lot of things happened in life that put that off till now, but it made me stronger and more determined to get through it all.
