I am watching cnn outfront hosted by erin burnett. Throughout this program she has said the most offensive things about nurses that are outrageous. This journalist has no medical experience. Has never worked as a nurse. However, she is actively critizing somone as they fight for their life. This nurse made a huge sacrifice by caring for someone who had ebola. The head of the cdc blame the nurse, doctors are doing inteviews blame the nurse, people who have never worked in a medical setting blame the nurse. We as nurses need stand up and demand the truth be told.
National Nurses Union rallies in Oakland after Dallas nurse diagnosed with Ebola
OAKLAND -- They stood together in bright red T-shirts, holding placards and signs. They stood together in sorrow, and in anger. But mostly, nurses from throughout California stood together Sunday as a symbol of warning.
The nation's hospitals aren't ready for an Ebola outbreak, a representative for the country's largest nurses union said, nor are they prepared to protect the people who may be called to fight it on the front lines.
"What is really important to note," Bonnie Castillo said during a gathering of nurses in Oakland, "is that the guidelines the Center for Disease Control want us to follow are insufficient and inadequate. We have to get those things corrected."...
... Just how that nurse contracted the virus is being investigated, but union members
hinted it was inevitable, considering the relative lack of training nurses have received.
They also objected to news reports citing a "breach in protocol" by the nurse in Texas.
"We're seeing that caregivers who are not being adequately trained are being blamed," said Katy Roemer, a registered nurse for more than 20 years who works at Kaiser. "We're hearing they did not follow proper protocol, when we've been asking our hospitals throughout the country to provide us with training that allows us to ask questions, with training about how to put on (and take off) the proper and optimal personal safety equipment. ... And we've seen that hospitals are not giving us this information. That's not going to work."...
Nurses Reject 'Scapegoat' Accusations After CDC Head Blames 'Protocol Breach' for Dallas Nurse Infection of EbolaNurses and other healthcare experts have rejected the accusation by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Thomas Frieden that a "protocol breach" led to the infection of a Dallas nurse from Ebola, arguing that there should be no "scapegoats" made during a troubling situation like this.
"You don't scapegoat and blame when you have a disease outbreak," said Bonnie Castillo, a registered nurse and a disaster relief expert at National Nurses United, according to Reuters on Monday. "We have a system failure. That is what we have to correct."...
Thank-you for this posting . I wish we as nurses continue to speak up and come up with a solution. I think the leaders in our field to MUST speak up and discuss how much this is an unfortunate tragedy.
Shite always rolls downhill. It isn't the FIRST time the person on the front lines gets blamed for an institutional deficiency.
I don't recall the name of the nurse interviewed on MSNBC who said there are two levels of PPE. The one used by CDC and one typically used in hospitals. I use PPE in dialysis outpatient, but I don't think our PPE would stop Ebola. we are instructed to use out lab coats multiple times. I wonder if this was the case in the Texas hospital. Could be there is a problem with the type of PPE in use and the training or protocols used for PPE.
I am with you on this one luv2. I had this debate with my brother's wife just last night. She insists that the nurse must have "broken protocol", but I disagree. This thing is spreading in Africa way too fast to be just bodily fluid transfer. Doctors and nurses KNOW what they are dealing with here so I cannot fathom them being sloppy. The more likely explanation is that the CDC and our government are flat-out lying about this virus. It is far more contagious than we are being led to believe...
For the record, I am not a doctor or disease specialist... this is just from reading about all this and is my opinion. Oh and I just heard this morning that a SECOND nurse that treated Duncan is infected! How many nurses and doctors need to be infected in the U.S. before the CDC is forced to admit that they are lying to us?
Logically, I don't see how anyone is buying the mainstream story!

LW
Based on statements from nurses it did not identify, the union described how Duncan was left in an open area of the emergency room for hours. It said staff treated Duncan for days without the correct protective gear, that hazardous waste was allowed to pile up to the ceiling and safety protocols constantly changed.

This is true but sad. Not enough research has been done about this disease.

I understand what you are saying. We must unite and come up with a solution instead of the blame game that usually occur. We need to come together for a solution.
