I am watching cnn outfront hosted by erin burnett. Throughout this program she has said the most offensive things about nurses that are outrageous. This journalist has no medical experience. Has never worked as a nurse. However, she is actively critizing somone as they fight for their life. This nurse made a huge sacrifice by caring for someone who had ebola. The head of the cdc blame the nurse, doctors are doing inteviews blame the nurse, people who have never worked in a medical setting blame the nurse. We as nurses need stand up and demand the truth be told.

Note, and I quote: "Meanwhile three nurses, two in the U.S. and one in Spain have caught the infection while treating Ebola patients, despite wearing protective suits." (emphasis mine)

The two nurses in Texas did NOT have adequate protective gear. Their skin was exposed. They were not working in teams as they do at the "four facilities" where they check to be sure that they are putting on and taking off their gear properly and safely. They did not have proper guideslines, nor proper safe equipment or even proper training. The nursing assistant in Spain reported she touched her face with her glove while caring for her patient.

Nursing assistant in Spain clear of Ebola infection - CBS News

"Romero was among Spain's team of health care workers caring for the priests in August and September and told officials she remembered touching a glove to her face after leaving the hospital room of Father Miguel Pajares, who died Sept. 25. She entered his room twice - once to change his diaper and another time after he died to retrieve unspecified items".

I believe we just don't know much at this point. For example, why has none of the family contacted it, yet 2 nurses here get it? The family doesn't wear PPE do they? Is it only "some" who get it due to their weak/strong immune system? If it's not airborne, why are they contacting everyone who was on the same plane? I live 2 hours from Dallas and very concerned. Handling the shopping carts take on a whole new meaning to me.

Bless the RN's who knowingly took on the task of caring for a patient with a potential, progressing to known, rare and scary disease. In the course of their care, they saw first hand how Ebola affects the human body. That Had to have been a very sobering and somber course of events.

We, as nurses, are always the patient advocate. Always questioning whether an order is within the best interests of the patient, and if not, speaking out against a questionable order. We never simply accept a physicians order as law, as it is always filtered through our education as nurses.

We are all judged by what a prudent nurse would do in each action that we take in the course of patient care. Not only are we held to high and exacting standards on the job, but our behavior has borne the task of prudential duty to others off the job as well. We may take off the uniform, but we never escape the license.

I believe that the nurses who are struggling with the fact that Amber boarded a plane twice after checking in with the CDC have in mind this sense of questioning about what a prudent nurse would do.

Found this on tumblr, thought it was appropriate!

Whoever came up with this should put it on a t shirt.

I don't know if I'd wear it any time soon,

But I sure as heck would buy one.

Maybe donate the money to a related cause.

It originated from The Happy Hospitalist blog,

and it is available on a tee shirt...
