Is Drama a Pre req?

Published

I'm a "mature" student in a one year PN program. I realize my attitude on alot of things is different than many of the students in our class. Although I'm not into the bar scenes, or weekend running, I do realize that younger students have those interests, and I don't blame them. They're young, I'm not.

But what is driving me absolutely crazy, is all the drama. Everything from who's boyfriend is doing what, who's missing class, who received a perfect score on the test... it just never ends. I try to mind my own business, and focus on what I have to deal with. But when it literally surrounds you it's hard to ignore. If this was only during breaks, it would be easy to deal with (I'd walk away), but this goes on during lecture, during study time etc. They never shut up. :uhoh3:

I've spoken to the instructors, they can't seem to control it. They do try, but in the back of the class(we have assigned seats) they don't always hear this stuff or they can't identify who is doing the talking.

I realize I'm an old fart, with older attitudes, but the drama is making me crazy. I want to say: deal with your boyfriend, or get out. Who cares who received the highest test score? Did you pass? Worry about passing, not everything else. So what if she's wore those jeans this week, who cares?

Sorry, I just needed to vent a bit. Some of these students just need to grow up , I know that. But I can just see them suctioning a patient while discussing who has the best sale on shoes.

I too was an adult when I went to nursing school. To be honest, I just ignored it. I had a husband who was deployed, two small kids and a full time job. I truly just ignored it.

Since you are paying for this experience, I would inform the instructors in writing that I request a seat up front because with all the chit chat where you sit, you are being distracted.

And...its only a year! Good luck in school.

Hopefully venting's helped a little. I think that's good advice, too - with any luck, being re-assigned seating will let you ignore as easily as the lecturers do :)

I'm in a program with adults (I think the youngest is mid-late 20's) and we don't have much of this. I LOVE it. :) There is some crazy stupid competitive crap though, which is some aspect of drama I guess.

Just try to ignore it! Good luck!

LOL! Major Kudos on this post!

I am only 26 but having been military I grew up fast. I cannot stand the drama. I keep to myself and stay out of it. Plus I am one of maybe five people who stays positive and does not whine relentlessly about everything.

Hang in there, I doubt it will ever change.

Thanks folks, venting has helped. Just knowing I'm not the only one who goes through this, helps also.

Unfortunately moving seats isn't an option. A number of people in our class have requested this, and it's not allowed.

I just know graduation is coming... have a great day!

Honestly..I'd take it up the chain. If they can't manage the classroom environment and keep people quiet (repeat talkers should be asked to leave) they should be able to find another way to enable you to hear lecture. And assigned seats is a little weird outside of grade school anyway.

Also, I was never above turning to people who were talking and asking them to be quiet.

Ok, I just turned 31 and it's not only the younger students acting like this. In my clinical everyone is older then me except this one girl and they all act like they're 18-20 years old. I'm not criticizing anyone who has fun and has a young mind (I personally feel like I'm 18) but these "adults" are really crazy, lol. Just wanted to point out that it's not only the young ones that are annoying. Honestly I'm not counting down the days until graduation (ok, a little) but I'm more counting down the days until I'm away from these people.

I hate to break it to you ... but after graduation, nursing students become nurses. You'll find a certain percentage of your professional collegues that exhibit the same behavior. The drama doesn't stop at graduation, it just moves on to the next scene.
