Is there anyone who thinks school is not that bad?

Published

All I see, hear and read are negative things about nursing school. From endless hours of studying, never seeing your children, broken relationships, instructors that fail you the last week of school...and it goes on.

Is there anyone who is finished or almost finished who thinks it is not that bad. Not the hell it is made out to be.

I would love to hear some good news instead of gloom and doom!!!!

One thing you gotta remember is that a lot of nursing students are non-traditional. They come back to school from other professions and/or have families already. Oftentimes they have to work on the side to help support said families. If you're a single person in college for the first time, you probably won't find nursing school as challenging.

I am single mom (half the year) of 4 children and still feel mainly positive things about nursing school.

Well I am liking second semester so far. Except for today, my mother-baby day at clinical was canceled b/c we've got 5 inches of snow on the ground and the roads are impassable:p.

Ah well extra time to study for our test on Monday. If school happens:lol2:

:lol2::lol2::lol2::lol2::lol2: Love what your husband said !!! I just got accepted and I'm already worried about feeding them ! Not to memtion the cleaning and the clothes. HOW DO YOU DO IT ALL !!! From now until I start nursing school in the fall I'm going to TRY to get every thing organized around here. The cleaning and the clothes I think I could handle. It's the trying to figure out what I'm going to FEED THEM ! I'm sure in no time my family will sound like your family !:lol2::lol2::lol2:

I am completely serious when I say that I bought a lot of extra undies and socks for both my daughter and me before I started nursing school. I figured that would extend the time before it became imperative to do laundry!!

My daughter was also in college. Some weeks, we just knew both of us had a crazy week and decided not to stress over things we couldn't get done like housework. I stocked up on paper plates and easy meals (thank goodness for prepared salads and nutritious frozen dinners.) a george foreman grill helped get dinner ready quickly - throw frozen chicken breasts on, nuke some veggies, get out a bag of ready-made salad and you're done! We also always cooked extra so we could have leftovers. Planning ahead helps a lot but sometimes you just get through the day!

I am also a single Mom and have plenty of responsibilities. I actually thinks it helps me to be a second career person. I remember my last fews jobs and that is drive enough in itself to keep looking forward. Not to mention, I'm actually doing what I WANT to do, not what I'm FORCED to do.

I don't think nursing school is that bad either. Maybe because I heard soo many horror stories as well before starting. I'm only in my first semester, but I was prepared for soo much worse. I have hospital experience as a CNA and I think that has really helped too. I think the hardest part is the early hours while also working pms and raising a family. It will all be worth it though!! I still spend time with family and friends when I can. I was so worried about not having enough time with my kids. There are days that I miss them, but we have a lot of time together too. School is interesting and fun so that helps. :D Good luck to you!!

I just graduated from an Accelerated BSN program, and it was wayyy easier than my microbiology degree. What makes nursing school hard is not the content, but the care plans and busywork bs!

I cannot tell you all how refreshing this post & its replies have been! Its good to see something reassuring or positive about nursing school for once!

I dont start nursing school until August, but I'm already trying to start preparing as much as possible ( hence me lurking on here :)) I've just bought some Pharm Phlash cards on amazon and plan on starting to learn meds. I know all schools are different, but i've heard that the worst part of my nursing program is the 1st 8 weeks because you dont know what to expect, and haven't figured out how to manage your time, and get used to the crazy schedules.

Amen to that!

What I didn't find difficult:

Understanding the material...came very easy for me.

What I did find maddening almost to the point of bringing me to the brink of insanity:

1. Unorganized instructors.

2. Instuctors playing favorites (we found out after graduation that two students in my class were getting "extra" help that the rest of us did not benefit from).

3. General miscommunication....which there is no excuse for with campus wide e-mail.

4. Lazy instructors that didn't read the current text....that is what the NCLEX will be based on...therefore, that is what I want to learn.

5. Instructors that were late to class, didn't show up for class/clinicals with no advanced warning...yet, had a meltdown if any of us were even LATE for a perfectly legitimate reason such as a horribly sick child or even a car accident on the way.

One of my goals is to be an instructor...mainly because while there are some very, very good instructors, but the bad ones can make your life a living hell.

Someone just asked me that the other day and without hesitation, I said "yes" I know it's weird, but I miss the constant learning, research and the challenges the instructors give you. I even miss the time in the car travelling to and from lecture, clinicals, work and home. I think you get out of nursing school what you put into it. The first semester really is the worst..you don't know whether you are coming or going, but, take that first week and get completely organized for the whole semester. you can then fill in your labs etc, as you schedule them. Once you make it through that first semester, you'll have a little better idea how to cope with the next 3.

I thought of my days in terms of hours, like "I have lecture for 4 hours, clinical for 6, that leaves me 14 hours to do....(including sleep of course) When you think of it that way, it just didn't seem as overwhelming to me and I have 3 kids, a husband AND worked fulltime as an LPN :D so, yes, I enjoyed nursing school, yes, I was stressed constantly while I was doing it, but I think that made me better!

I enjoyed LPN school far more than I'm enjoying doing statistics and a humanities class this semester. Thankfully these are the last 2 general ed classes I will ever have to take :) I start the RN program in August and when I go for BSN all I have will be nursing classes.

I enjoy the challenges of nursing school as well as learning the content. My brain is happiest when challenged.

I'm not in nursing school yet, but I wanted to weigh in on the topic. I don't know how hard it will be and I know I can't grasp the amount of work I will have to put into my degree, but I do know one thing: I love myself and my boyfriend too much to let either of us suffer. This talk of broken relationships and nervous breakdowns have me slightly worried, but I know I will try my hardest to ensure that I take care of myself and my personal relationships above all else. I want to be a nurse so bad, but I don't want to suffer forever or make my loved ones suffer because of my crazy behavior.

Just a thought :)
