Here's a new sticky for students involved in online/distance BSN programs through Indiana State University. Enjoy!
Chaxanmom, Congrats on a great score !!
Quick question- does anyone know if I need to take the optional essay with Analysis of Literature Clep? I think I need to take it with the Tech Writing and for Freshman Comp but I'm unsure with the Clep Lit., I've scheduled this test for mid Sept.
BSN2b09- You'll like the Lifespan one, some on here took the DSST Human Growth and Development test ($100) cheaper than the Excelsior.
I just did my LAST nursing challenge exam today! Got a 92 on the maternity one (N330)!! All I can tell you guys is do that practice test!!! There were a LOT of questions straight off of the practice test in the study guide. Same deal with the N106 one (just FYI).I'm doing my retest of public speaking next. *gulp* This has been hanging over my head for over a year. Failed it the first time d/t my speech being just shy of 3 min. I've been dreading retaking it but I gotta get it over with. Ugh.
CONGRATS!!!!!! on getting such a good score.
Thanks for the heads up on the study guides. Best of luck on the public speaking test.

Hi fellow students,
I am testing out of pathophysiology next week and gerontology the following week. Been working on these guys for a couple of months. (working full time) I have purchased the test off the Excelsior site so I am sure I will pass it this time. The first time I scheduled it waaay too early in the morning. I am a second shifter and I tested at 8am. Bad idea. Anyway, I have an afternoon apointments for the next ones. I also come to this site often to read the good/bad/indifferent stuff that everyone posts here. All of you guys are cheerleaders for me. YK This person says I am doing it this way and another says I was feeling blue and didn't study for a while but now I am back. I can relate to all of it.
Have a great week,

Mhr2133, I think I'm going to leave the math for last (College Algebra and Statistics) since I have math phobia. I just finished the Tech. Writing so I will test out either next week or early next month. Then I will start Life Span. I also think it's a good idea to do Statistics now since you there is so much math in your memory at this time.Chaxanmom congrats to you on N330 and thanks for the studying info.
I just did Tech Writing a couple of months ago. It's easy peasy. You will do great.
Ok I'm done with Algebra - just back from the test. For all of those that want to test out of this one. I'll be honest, it was a lot.
My recommendations to do this - first there are a load of "practice college algebra tests on the internet (each college has one that will come up to figure out your math class placement) take some of these and decide where you are at : pre algebra, Algebra, algebra II(some call it intermediate algebra). The test is about 90% or more Algebra I/II, I can only remember a couple that were college algebra level.
I would use "educosoft" a self learning program that costs $15 a month to take you through all of it, it is the best at giving very detailed explainations . I would also buy a cheap Algebra II textbook off Amazon. There are great sites (math for morons, Paul's online math notes(my favorite), purplemath) for self teaching if you get stuck on something
If you are slow at math-contact ISU I got an email back from the testing center, they said that they would accept the DSST College Algebra and this is an untimed test-you may want to research that option.
The TCN guide is worthless for learning, most of the questions don't have detailed explainations of how they got the answer, but the 2 practice tests are very close to the real test. REA also has a book with 3 practice tests, but not good for learning. Petersons' $20 for 3 tests would be good.
The big thing with this test is time, practice your time. I started this one from nothing, so it can be done. If anyone plans on taking this one, PM me I'll send you what I have.
Hi,
Here is where I sit.....
Struggled with Algebra for 1 year! Will be taking an online Algebra class starting Monday as well as Public Speaking thru IVY Tech.
Next semester I will take Statistics and another Algebra class as I could not score high enough on the placement test to take College Algebra!
Will enroll in ISU next fall!!!! I will have ALL my non-nursing classes done except Spanish!
I wasted alot of time trying to CLEP out of Algebra! Be careful, your passing score is alot higher for the CLEP Algebra ( I think it is a 60) and if you struggled with Math in high school, maybe you should consider a class.
Also, make sure your Chemistry class is 4 credits as most online programs are only 3.
Good Luck all.....
Brenda
HI
I'm really interested in the LVN to BSN program. I'm in Ca and compare to the private schools here it is so much cheaper. I have done all my research and read almost all the thread. However, I still can't find an answer as to how long it will take me. I have ALL my general ed and Pre-requisites done at a community college. If I were to tackle this FULL time and give it my all how fast can I finish the program? Any current ISU students and graduates please give me an idea.
Thank you so much
No way will it be that long if she has *all* her pre-reqs done. When I started I just had a few testouts plus challenge exams to do and here's my schedule:
Spring 08-
Nursing in Mental Illness (the N106 challenge test is a pre-req)
Transition LPN to BSN
Research and Theoretical Basis for Practice
Whatever the assessment class is called now (lol)
Fall 08-
Med-Surg II (N224 challenge test is pre-req)
Nursing Care of Families in stress and crisis
PE 101 (may not need if you already have this)
-you also have to do the last two challenge exams this semester...before you start 400 level courses)
Spring 09-
Med-surg III
Community Health Nursing
Communications 101 (because the DSST one is a nightmare and I found out I can take this distance through an agreement with other CCs. Yea!)
Fall 09-
Nursing leadership
Reflective nursing practice
Professional nursing synthesis
And thats it!!
