So I have another question. I'm taking the LPN course at a local community college and to get my license through the college I have to take human Growth & Development and I'm taking BIO 231 right now. Do these courses transfer over tho ISU or do I have to try to CLEP out of them? Also, even though I'm not licensed yet will they tell me what I need to do if I call them at ISU? Everything I've seen says you have to be licensed to request info. Thanks again everyone!

The pre recs can be taken at a CC or university they do not have to be clep'd dantes or EC exams, these routes just make it alot faster to get pre rec's out of the way. ISU is really the only ppl that can tell you if the classes that you are taking right now at CC will be equivalent to what they reaquire, but that can't be done till you put your application in and they evaluate your transcripts.

Hi everyone,

For all of you still starting out on the pre-req, Here's what I know on sociology -

All and all an easy one, if you can get the TCN guide it is very good and more than enough to pass. Also useful are the 20 practice tests on www.extremeintellect.com (under free online practice tests), and someones vocab list on www.flashcardexchange.com/flashcards/list/371023. , spark chart/notes would work fine. I think I could have passed with just these free items and so many more on the internet.

This test would be good to do while still in LVN school (also the human growth and devel ,and intro to psych)

Chaxanmom - the time frame you listed for the RN part, is that the fastest it can be done? Also I believe you listed somewhere on here what tests I need to make sure are upper level. I've read all the posts twice and still can't find that list - its mind numbing. I'm getting down to the statistic , diversity, religion, ethics. Does anyone know how to get Freshman Comp graded - TCN tells you to have that taken before enrolling in ISU but clep wants you enrolled in ISU so the exam can be sent to them for grading, also anyone know if you need to take the essay portion of technical writing ? Thanks

You do have to take the essay portion of Technical Writing but it is sooo easy. I had to describe, in detail, the components of a Thermos. It was kind of a fun writing project! Now the public speaking Dantes? Ohhh heck no. Bain of my existance. I failed it once for timing being short and chickened out the second time. I talked to Jeanine O. at ISU and you can take Comm 101 as a distance course with Ivy Tech so I'm doing that and it's totally ok that the rest of my courses are 400 level then.

As far as upper level stuff...just go to indstate.com/nursing and go to the program page for LPN-BSN. It will list all your requirements. Print it off so you have it on hand because you will referrence it a lot for course numbers, etc. I think it was technical writing we were referring to. Doesn't have to be technical writing but it does have to be an upper level writing courses of some type.

I took freshman comp at a cc. You don't have to be in the nursing program at ISU to send them your scores. Just apply for admission so you are listed as a regular student and you can send scores there. That way they will have a file for you to put your scores in. :)

The time frame I listed is as fast as it can be done. Dr. Miller gave me that plan. Upper level nursing courses build on each other so you can't take 424 and 450 until you have taken all the rest except the last three and those last three can only be taken in your last semester so no, not a lot of flexibility with that aspect of the schedule. Pre-reqs you can stack as high as you want and if you test out you can do them super fast so if you want to finish quickly just hussle through that portion. :) Trust me, you don't want to hussle through the nursing courses. You have to balance study time with clinical hours and remember this is much more like a traditional program than Excelsior so it's not just learning the info. There are papers to do, concept maps, assignments, required postings, etc. I did 4 nursing courses last semester (Transition LPN to BSN has like 5 chapters of pharm a day) and my GPA dropped from a 4.0 to a 3.76. I had time to do the assignments and reading (barely) but no time to actually study, kwim?

I found one hospital that I've done all of mine in so far. ISU just got a contract with Johns Hopkins Hospital so I'm really hoping to do Med-surg III (high acuity) there so we'll see. I'm in Maryland and doing mine at Suburban Hospital which has been awesome but I do want to try JHH if I can! :yeah:

Update: Got approved by JHH! Yea!! You have to either be a JHH employee or be planning to work there to do rotation there though. JHH would be my dream job so yeah that's no problem! Just depends now if they have an available preceptor in one of the ICUs. *crossing fingers*

hello newbe here this is tcn right do we need to pathophysiology some people r asking me why im taking it if i only need a&p and micro please let me know :banghead:

Yes you need pathophysiology. It's not a pre-req before applying to the nursing program but it is a pre-req to N324/Med-surg II.

Hi,

My name is Brenda and I have been an LPN for 25 years. I work in a small rural hospital. I also am certified in Gastroenterology (CGN). I work primarily in Endoscopy procedures now but have worked Med-Surg nursing for 15 years.

I have always wanted to get my college degree. ISU is perfect for me. I am not in a hurry and am not doing this for the money (altho a raise will be nice).

I started 2 years ago with no credits. I have done the following:

A&P, Micro, Pathophys,Eng. Comp, Intro to Soc, Intro to Psych, Lifespan Dev. Psych,Gerontology,Inf. Sys./Computer App and will be testing out of American History 1 next week.

My plan is to get all other non-nursing classes done so when I enroll in ISU, I will have Phase 2 and just nursing classes left.

This is a great way for us to communicate so lets use this!

Sincerely, Brenda

Are you going through The College Network?

yes i took a&p and gerontology already im working on pathophysiology right now how about you

How was Gerontology? I'm taking it Wednesday. Haven't been able to study nearly as much as I would have liked. Yikes!

You seem to be very knowledgeable! I have read most of your posts. So you are not using TCN-correct? You were able to apply to ISU independently and then sent them your transcripts/test scores etc? Does CLEP send them directly for you? Sorry for all the questions- I have been an LPN 10 years and been in school most of those 10. I already have so many credits so i know I dont need many more. Thanks!!

I used a combination of brick and mortar college and a few TCN guides. I've been picking away at my degree on and off for about 100 years. Haha! You can have you scores sent directly to ISU. Also you can take all your pre-reqs online with ISU if you choose to. You would use the arrangement they have with community colleges in Indiana combined with their gen ed courses. It's just easier to do testouts since you can, yk?

I would go ahead and apply to ISU as a pre-nursing major until you get into the nursing program. Then you will have a DARS report that tells you exactly what you still need to complete your degree.

Thank you for such a straight forward answer. I cancelled my contract with TCN. I was feeling uneasy about once the rep left. I just needed to do some additional research. It feels like 100 years to me as well. I have been in a BSN program already but had to stop due to 2 back to back pregnancies. So once again I am on my way back to school. Good Luck to you!
