Here's a new sticky for students involved in online/distance BSN programs through Indiana State University. Enjoy!
Hi guys-To those of you out there with all the pre-reqs to complete---I finished Psych and Lifespan---there's what I found. I took the Clep Human Growth and Development for the Lifespan part, so I took 2 Clep's.
Both tests are relatively easy-take them both together and then right after that go for the Gerontology test. These 2 cleps overlap each other and after you study Psych you are half way through the Human Growth and Development test so you might as well get that one also. Then after these 2 you are now a third the way through Gerontology.
These tests are heavy on the "theories" Freud, Piaget, Vygotsky, Erickson, Jung, Rogers" also each kind of theory -cognitive, behavior, psychosocial and what each of them covers. The Human growth and development had none of those lifespan NCLEX questions - like what happens first sitting up alone or the pincher grasp, just theories.
I used the TCN module for Lifespan and the teachers edition (I found it on half.com for 75 cents) of Excelsiors textbook. For Psych I found a book - Psychology Made Simple by Alison Thomas-Cottingham, ISBN: 0-7679-1543-7. It was awesome, followed the test better than TCN , easy to understand, and cost me $12 at the local Barnes and Nobles. It has questions at the back of each chapter.
I have Gerontology this Thurs but that looks like just common sense (or just maybe it's because I'm old and can relate!) I took the practice test and got a 78 before I even read the book so I'm hoping for a easy pass on Thurs.
So the clep Human growth is equivalent to Lifespan? Will ISU accept this inplace of Lifespan through EC?
Oh one more thing--I need your opinion - Algebra, Micro, Anatomy, Chem. - what order should I study them in? Do I need some Algebra to understand Chem? Will Anatomy be easier if I finish Micro first? or does it really matter at all. I'd really appreciate any help you guys could give me as to the order I should approach these ones with. Thanks,
I did micro and then A&P and now patho. I would definitely do micro before patho...not so sure it's essential before A&P though.
Hi,
I looked on the ISU website and they have posted minimum scores acceptable for CLEPS. You need to have a 65 to test out of College Algebra or a 60 for College Math to satisfy the Quanitative Literacy requirement. Those are higher scores. It looks like Human Growth and Development will work in place of Lifespan. Go to ISU and in the search type in CLEP. First one.....

Thanks so much Brenda !!!!!!!!!!! great info on that page.
Does anyone know if the pen and pencil exams are that much more difficult? (scores required are lower). Not even sure where you could schedule a paper one. The required score of 65 on Algebra is pretty scary.
The biggest problem with not going through TCN is not having someone to ask these questions to, You guys are great !!. I have called them a couple of times, but as soon as they found out I was in California I was referred back to TCN, anyone else have this happen to them.
I have heard the Tech Writing exam is one of the easier ones. I think we do have to take the essay part as they are giving us "upper credit" for this exam.
Also, here is my 2 cents regarding Algebra. I spent 3 months trying to teach myself to CLEP out of Algebra. I could not come even close to a passing score using the CLEP practice exams. So, I took a placement test which put me in MAT 050 and then when i pass that, I can take MAT 111.
Both these courses I am taking thru IVY Tech. ISU will accept only MAT 111. MAT 050 is a non-credit class =( I have been out of school 29 years so I need the course. Both of these are completely on-line.

ISU wants math 111 or higher. My CC offers mathmatics 112 it says pre-algebra. I know this is higher than 111 but I wonder if they would accept this. I may just take this one anyway so that maybe with this as a refresher I can pass the college algrbra or the college mathmatics clep.... I am scared of statistic also because the CC catalog list math 123c as the pre rec needed. I'm not sure stats would be one that I could pass through EC. Any thoughts???????
Hi,
I have heard the Statistics exam is one of the harder ones. I have been working at all my prereq for the last 3 years and have decided to take traditional long distance classes for the following...Algebra and Statistics For Chemistry, I will be taking a traditional summer class at my local college as this needs a Lab component and it is a 4 credit class. I have tested out on all the rest of the prereq (I started with no credits). I do have Tech Writing left and will take the DSST Exam but I have already taken ECE's English Comp with essay, so I am well prepared.
Good Luck,
Brenda
Hi,
I forgot to mention Instacert. http://www.instantcertonline.com/forums/ This area is free.
They have a wealth of info there under the discussion area. Study tips, etc. The best area is under the exam specific section. You must create an acct. to see that area.
I have used them for various exams and for $20 a month, you cannot go wrong. www.instacert.com
