It's great to see a distance /independent learning topic. Currently, I am considering Deaconess School of Nursing. Is there anyone else considering this school? I find I definately work better independently and I'm hoping to make a decision soon on whether to go for Deaconess or not. The problem is the cost, it is so darn expensive. I am trying to get into my local college adn program but there are a ton of applicants so I don't know if that's going to happen. I am not going to wait another year to start nursing school if I don't have to.

I also particpated in the study groups, received a ton of important info and hints back in 2000. If you have access to the study groups, please utilize them! Sorry, I didn't save some of the info, but I will try to offer support and answer questions if I can. By the way, completed my first class with UOP, proud of the "A" I earned!!!!!!!! It was tough working full time and I wrote a paper a week, but it will be worth it.
zoe are you in a msn or bsn at cal state dominguez hills. i am thinking about their online msn for parent/child clin spec. what do you think. what's the tuition like? plmk if you see this. thanks!
I am glad they started this forum too. I was wondering if people really did well and enjoyed the on-line classes. I have heard of the UOP and Excelsior. I was looking at MCP Hahnemann which is run by Drexel University, only because I knew someone who had gone there and said it was good. I will look more into these programs now. I am currently taking some classes I needed to get into MCP Hahnemann and find them nice. I am organized and motivated. A friend dropped out because she couldn't make herself do it, she would wait until the last minute for projects and papers. She said is had to take them in a classroom because then she would know she had to go to class. i don't know, it works for me.
I looked on their site but couldn't find anywhere that said how much each credit costs, enrollment fees, etc. Anywhere you suggest I look?

Go to the financial aid button on the left hand side of the screen, then select tuition and fees, that will open up their online catalog. Then just scroll down until you see the tuition info.
I have not heard of any problems with this program. Although, it would be interesting to talk to someone who has started the program. The online asn just started in August, so it's really a new program. I don't know how long they have been offering the BSN online.
The school is over 100 years old and has a good reputation- That's what I know from people that have lived in St Louis. I do know someone that just started the program in August who emails me once in a while (she has posted to Allnurses) and so far is pleased. If all goes well, I will be starting the program in June. It is very expensive - $4900 a semester - but my employer will be paying for it! YIPEE!!!!!!
Yes, the program at Deaconess is very expensive. This is the only drawback that I can see (besides having to fly there for clinical validations). One of our local private Universities charges about the same per credit hour, so I think it's probably on par as far as tuition goes. But, it is sooooo much money. I have started looking for loans and I am starting to think along the lines of the L'oreal commercial "because I'm worth it".
Hi. First off, let me say I think very highly of Excelsior. I received my BSN in 2001 (was an EMT, took me just under two years). I was very well prepared to jump right in at work (good thing too because there was no preceptorship- I think that's a word, lol).
As far as I know, Illinois is the only state that won't accept initial licensure from Excelsior. Each state has different requirements about things. Missouri required labs in A&P & an ethics course and I think, unless things have changed, a course that includes the state & U.S. constitution (I took a political science course from a local university).
Don't waste your money on Rue, etc. Everything I needed, I got from Excelsior (study guides were free unless you wanted the combined pkg). They had a site that you could buy used & sell books & student chats, I guess they still do.
