I was told by the forum I shouldn't lie in bed next to the patient because of infection risks. I doubt I would have anyway, but can I still hug the residents?
What are some inappropriate things you've seen CNA's do that I shouldn't pick up?

This probably goes without saying, but I once saw a CNA carrying a dirty brief in her bare hands walking down the hallway.

Be careful of how you support a patient to a sitting position. he WILL extend an arm to you and it is natural to grasp his hand and pull him. Don't. Support the shoulders.

I've worked with a few who never wear gloves around bodily fluids. A few who would carry briefs down the hall..................

I saw a CNA disconnect an IV line to put a gown on a patient (3 mo. old peds pt) & then reconnect it w/o using aseptic technique. I told the RN & she told me they have problems with her all the time - she likes to work outside her scope of practice.....scary!

This one scared me! Did someone fix the problem? I don't know what this means but it sounds terrible! My daughter was in the hospital about around 3 months and the thought that someone could put a baby in danger like this terrifies me.

My biggest pet peeve..waiting until 5 minutes before the shift is over to give me important info about one of the residents. Nurse Pixie, Mrs P didn't urinate during our shift...waited until you're walking out the door to tell me..
Getting on full precautions (gown, gloves, booties, hair bonnet, mask) to bring in a meal tray to a resident who's on contact precautions for an illness/disease that is ONLY transmittable through urine or feces!
Like I said, I did tell the RN & she told the charge nurse. I don't know what happened to the CNA but I do know they were having problems with her similar to this in the past. I do hope they fixed it b/c the last thing anyone needs (especially a child) is an unnecessary infection because somebody wants to play nurse.

I saw a CNA inappropriately restrain an elderly man with dementia by forcing him to lie down on the bed and this CNA actually stood on the patients thighs to get his diaper off. Everyone knew this resident just didn't like being cared for by males. I yanked him off the resident and reported him to the RN in charge. He got off with a slap on the wrist.

We have one that puts diapers on everyone and tells them they are not allowed to walk to the bathroom. She has been reported numerous times and by several angry family members and patients, yet she still works there. SHe disappears during her shift, she can usually be found in an empty room watching tv.
