Inappripriate things you've seen a CNA do?

Published

I was told by the forum I shouldn't lie in bed next to the patient because of infection risks. I doubt I would have anyway, but can I still hug the residents?

What are some inappropriate things you've seen CNA's do that I shouldn't pick up?

This thread has really gone a little far out of place. I was asking for less obvious things I shouldn't do. Pulling out IVs and having sex with the elderly for money is just a little obvious.

Aside from that, my question remains unanswered. May I hug the residents under my care?

Sorry, I haven't read the entire thread. I read the first post and typed my response. Not sure I want to read the entire thread after reading this post.

When I was a nursing student on my geriatric rotation I saw something I will never forget. I reported it to my instructor. A resident was taking about 80% of her regular diet. They were serving her a can of ensure with every meal. She was pretty with it mentally. She kept questioning why they were giving her Ensure if she was eating most of her food. Nobody would give her an answer. I was assigned to her for 8 weeks. After the third week, she knew I was going to be with her and she must have figured if she asked me, maybe I could get her an answer. She asked me to find out for her. I asked the CNA if she knew. She got in my reisdents face, IN HER FACE...2 inches away from her face and said, (a direct quote)"It's because you're crazy Susie, you're ccccrrraaazzzyyy" this was said to my resident while the CNA did the index finger in a circular motion around the temple crazy sign. I am sure I turned about 5 shades of red to purple, it took everything I had to not grab the CNA's wrist and stop her.

My Lord... I just may cry. :'(

i saw a cna disconnect an iv line to put a gown on a patient (3 mo. old peds pt) & then reconnect it w/o using aseptic technique. i told the rn & she told me they have problems with her all the time - she likes to work outside her scope of practice.....scary!

that is not too bad. when i was in high school getting my cna certification my instructor and i walked in on a cna scrubbing what remained of some old guy's teeth with nitropaste. she saw a tube in the patient's bathroom and assumed it was toothpaste without actually taking the time to read the label.

the most inappropriate thing i observed as a cna however, was an lpn who gave a back massage with nitropaste. she got a headache, the patient died. she did not even get fired. the patient had no family, was wacked out of his mind from dementia and had previously been made a dnr.

It is very inappropriate and totally unprofessional when the CNA talks crap to the patients about nurses and other coworkers. I overheard as a CNA was talking badly about the nurses to her patient as she was changing the sheets.

Silent patient-

In your first post you said you were told you shouldn't lay next to them in bed for infection risks, I think that goes beyond infection risks, I don't see any reason why you should be lying in the bed with a patient.

I don't see why you can't hug your patients, in fact this profession is probably one of the few professions it wouldn't be looked at wrong to give a hug without being looked at crazy. That is one of the great things about this field I think, it's ok TO CARE about your patient and is even encouraged.

Shoot I had to tell a patient repeatedly one night I loved him. Felt totally awkward to me because I don't use that phrase a lot to non family and children. But he was an elderly demented patient that kept telling me he loved me and loved god and god loved him and if you didn't say it to him back he because very agitated.

I have seen some Aides and nurses alike that probably shouldn't have jobs working with people, but I have seen some really awesome ones to, the unit I worked on for the first round of clinicals had the best aides I had ever worked with.
