I'm sorry, honey. Mommy is a nurse...

Nurses Rock

Published

How many of you nurses have told your kids this? LOL.

Specializes in Peds ED, Peds Stem Cell Transplant, Peds.
My favorite motto.....Blood doesn't matter if there isn't any bones showin! brush it off move on!

Yeah that is what I said, unfortunately for my 12 yr old daughter, kept complaining her hip hurt, I ignored her and told her to stop whining and continue running, she was in track and field.I made her run on a broken "chipped" hip for 3 weeks. We ended up in PT for the summer. Who would of thought a healthy teenager with no history of trauma would have a broken hip?

I find myself constantly assessing now when I meet people I'm looking for "abnormalities" lol also not much gets me freaked out now. Other people ask me about their problems like its life shattering and I'm pretty casual. I'm sorry I didn't realize the sky was falling when you fell and hurt your knee lol. My reply was RICE it, you'll be fine.

My mom's favorite motto when I was a kid..."Suck it up!"

If I do get some type of sickness or injury, I use myself as my own case study and try and look it up in my nursing books and figure out what it is!

Not really...but I really do not go to the doctor unless absolutely necessary or for preventative care thanks to good ol' mom's tough love. :roflmao:

I worked for our Pediatrican's summer camp for 5 years starting when sons were 2yo + 5yo. They reminded the campers that "Ice was for injury" as they were the ones to run the ice chest up to the dinning hall for refills. Funny hearing a 6 yo tell a 15 yo camper "Can't you read my Mom's sign: Clean the cut with Peroxide on cotton ball, apply antibiotic ointment and cover with bandaid."

I did get into action quickly after older 7 yo son fell into septic tank at summer camp splitting lip on his way back to our room in infirmary. Nickname "Chocolate Jimmie" hard to live down. Fact he hung onto ledge, saved him from drowning. Our Pediatrician quickly stitched him up and made sure grate tank cover bolted down.

When the youngest fractured his lower leg playing soccer, DH and son called me after ER trip since I was working as home care RN 30 miles away "Patient's come first Mom".

I don't show undue concern outwardly but am inwardly assessing and triaging.

Not spurting blood? Deal with it.

Continued pain for too long, despite all measures? Hmmmm, may make an appt.

I did rush youngest to Urgent Care when I noted a red streak going up his leg, starting at a small cut on his leg.

+Abx, yes.

Also called a pediatrician friend when youngest developed croup.

Dh was out of town for a week, for meetings.

I was alone with two kids under 6yo.

Not being a peds nurse, had never heard the distinctive bark/cough.

Friend advised me to use the steam from the shower to relieve sx.

Next morning I got a cool air humidifier, which was our family's friend for years.

If one of the kids woke up coughing, he'd get out of bed, stand in front of the humidifier for a few min, then go back to bed. :D

Oh no I am way to paranoid not to seek medical attention. They are my precious babies a scrape, bruise, tugging of the ear, chest pain I'm in the ER...better safe then sorry. I am a fairly new nurse though lol

Oh my gosh, my grown sons still say, Be glad your mom is not a nurse your get no sympathy! Which is not exactly true but why spend hours in an ER if you can just steri strip it!

totally!!

My kids hate not being able to get out of going to school. No fever, no vomiting/diarrhea (nope, that's soft poop, not diarrhea!) not the first day of a head cold? You're going. I tend to handle emergencies in a calm manner too. My son broke his arm (green stick of radius/ulna) and as he held his arm bent at an angle up to show me, I said, "Yup, that's broken. We're going to the hospital." Of course I had come hurtling off the deck like Jesse Owens, but by saying that, the other ones burst into tears. Had to calm them down and drive little bubs to the ER.

No puking, no spurting blood, no broken bones... go to school! Doctor's office rarely.. I worked there when kids were young. 3 kids one ER visit.. teenage daughter split head open late one night at a bomb fire.
