I'm 31 married with a 2 year old. Am I too old to start fnp program?

Published

I have been a nurse for six years. I feel kinda discouraged like maybe I should have become a fnp a long time ago. I'm wondering if school will be much harder now at 31. I had really good grades in school but haven't had to study, write papers, projects etc. in forever and part of me feels like what am I doin starting all over again? I don't know. I don't guess I really have a question but thanks for reading. Any comments are appreciated.

Great advice everyone. It's never too late to start something new! Life is full of opportunities for people if of all ages! Go with your heart...it will never ateer you in the wrong direction unless its forced! But if you got this far...you can do it!

Don't worry, you shouldn't have returned to school "a long time ago." You should have a fair number of years of nursing experience under your belt before studying to be an advanced practice nurse.

Absolutely not. I am in FNP program and I am in my mid 40s. Please just find a college which allows you to do your preceptorship in adult, gynecology and pediatrics separately. Otherwise to find a preceptorship who is actually a family practitioner and do birth to death can be really challenging. I am facing that problem right now. Thank you and Best of luck.

I'm sorry, but, at 31 yrs old, you should be picking out a nice retirement village and sending for mail order adult diapers in unmarked packages. You have no business raising a 2 year old, let alone advancing your career! I'm surprised, at your age, you can even type this post out! Do you still have ANY of your own teeth left?

I didn't even start nursing school until I was 31 and had a 3 year old and a 10 month old! You are not too old! If you want it, do it! :)

I'm probably older than all of you, and it's an issue I've been thinking about...do I really want to spend all that time and money at this stage of my life.

I start my 1st class next month

I'll graduate FNP school in May at 38, so no....I don't think you're too old. And the 'do I really belong in NP school?' question, I think most of us have asked ourselves that at least once if not once a semester.

I will be 47 when I start my DNP program, which means I'll be nearly 51 by the time I graduate. You're never too old to follow your dreams. 31 is still young :)

I graduated with my MSN at 55. Age is just a number!!!

No, you're not. I'm 38 and married with a 17 year old and a 19 year old who will be starting her Sophomore year in college. I'm in the last year of my ACNP program. You can do it. Like anything else, it's hard work and dedication, but doable :) I wish you the best in your endeavors.
