I'm 31 married with a 2 year old. Am I too old to start fnp program?

Published

I have been a nurse for six years. I feel kinda discouraged like maybe I should have become a fnp a long time ago. I'm wondering if school will be much harder now at 31. I had really good grades in school but haven't had to study, write papers, projects etc. in forever and part of me feels like what am I doin starting all over again? I don't know. I don't guess I really have a question but thanks for reading. Any comments are appreciated.

I'm 35 with three kids and married, and have been thinking about it too. If you want it go for it! I know I'll be doing it when I'm ready.

No you aren't too old lol 31 is young! If you want to do it then go do it

I graduated NP school at 44 after years of being an RN. My advice-- do it now, don't wait.

Unless you are 31 and born on Feb 29th on a leap year, which would technically make you 124 years old, no, you are not too old. From what I read of your post, you definitely have to bolster your confidence that you can do it and maybe taking a couple of classes to get back into the hang of school again is the way to get that confidence back. Without confidence and drive to see you through it you'll get easily discouraged because it is a grind that you won't want to embark on without having your goal of becoming an NP clear and always top of mind. Just don't want to kid yourself if you really are not all in and focused on doing it. If you put your mind to it, you will likely be able to do it! Besides, your going to be older anyway someday so you might as well be older, making more money, and with a career that you enjoy.

Heck no you're not too old, go for it!

I returned to get my MSN when I was 31. I didn't have any children and it was a little tough at first getting back into academia, but if it's really what you want I say go for it. There were people in my program much older than me as well.

I'm 49 and starting my third year of the acute NP program. Sometimes I think I'm too old and then I remember I have to work for probably the next 20 years anyway! If you want it, do it.

You're a young un' as far as students go!

I teach in an AGNP program, and our current crop of students range in age from 22 to 64. The mean age is ~ 41 years.

Don't let your perceived "lateness" in starting your FNP studies hinder you from pursuing a great career option.

I am 61, with a PhD and two master's, and am starting a post-master's in psych-mental health NP next month...and will continue to work full-time as a professor and as an NP.

You're only as old as you feel...

If 31 is too old then I am ancient.

You can be 33 or 34 and a NP or 33/34 years old where you are now.

I know an anesthesiologist who went to medical school at 36 years old. He faced the same concerns and his wife told him you will be finished by 50 years old. But, by 50, you can be an insurance agent and 50 years old or an anesthesiologist and be 50!

You decide!

go for it!!
