I'm not coming back to this gig!

Published

I suppose this could be posted in the nurse colleague / pt relations forum; but I have decided to see the humor in my situation.

I'm providing non medical care, simply stand by assistance through an agency.

This is my 1st time doing home care.

If I was new to being in this field, I'd probably be freaking out or crying.

Picture it: lives alone, appears A&Ox4, and is not indigent by any means.

Within 5 mins of my arrival, she tells me not to flush her toilet. She's used it about 8 times in the last 7 hrs. [emoji40] UTI.

15 mins into my shift, she tells me I can't wash my hands after assisting her to the toilet. I just pull her brief down and slide a new one up.

Just now, she told me that I wasn't allowed to close the door after I used the restroom.

I told her that she's welcome to call the agency that placed me and tell them she wants me to leave and I will. But I will continue to close the door when I use the restroom.

Then, as she sat on the toilet she suddenly screamed at me and said, "I have no privacy look at me!"

At that moment, I reminded her that I offered her privacy to use the restroom. I said, just because you opted not to accept it, I was still going to close the door to use the restroom.

5 more hrs to go...........

All of my Geriatric/Dementia patients are this "difficult" and that is them on a good day... I wish you a speedy shift AND I second @thmpr, BSN, EMT-P's sentiment: MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

Just make sure she is not developing an encephalitis due to the UTI. Make sure this is her baseline behavior. If she is becoming septic due to the UTI it could be causing mental confusion.

When my dad starts talking about piloting planes and landing them at JFK airport, I know he has a UTI. :sarcastic:

I totally considered the fact that her UTI could be related to the strange behaviors. I also considered septicemia.

I am pretty sure this is her baseline though, because the agency warned me that she has actively chosen to fall at least once rather than use her walker or w/c while a caregiver was present. they also told me she doesn't like small talk, doesn't want to hear about your problems, and that I can't park in her super sized driveway. In fact, she called the agency on me when I first arrived after I offered her privacy and was told not to wash my hands.

Therefore, I think her baseline is always a little bit eccentric/strange

I do have some concerns, though. Perhaps I'll talk to the agency. I really don't want to make waves though.

This job doesn't require a nursing license or even NA cert. I have worked for the agency in the past and an usually placed in a hospital.

I took this assignment because I need money, and they needed help.

Sorry for laughing at your dilemma but this is exactly why I know I could never do home health. Stuck with one person's crazy for a full shift, no way!

Usually crazy comes in groups. I'm talking patient and their entire messed up family. Control freak Mom, dirty old man grandpa, meth head brother, religious fanatic grandma, the list goes on and on.

It's often reality show material...
