ICU opportunities

Was anybody able to get into an ICU unit as a new grad (ADN). If not, how many months and of what department did you need to start out in before you got your place in ICU. Is there ever positions for an LPN in ICU. Thanks

Very rarely are there ever any positions for LPNs in ICU the only hospital around here that has a couple LPNs in their ICU is a very very small hospital and the ICU only has 3 beds!

It depends on the facility whether or not they will allow new grads in specialty units but it has been done. More than 50% of my class went into critical care and others went straight into OB/L&D and Peds. No, LVNs/LPNs are rarely used in ICU.

I went straight into ICU after graduating. And no, none of the critical care units in that hospital hired LPN's, only RN's. I think you'll find this to be common practice.

I was a monitor tech before in ICU and when I graduated from LPN school I went into the unit of a very large hospital and I have worked in 4 icu's of significant sizes. but the one I started already knew me since I was promised a job as soon as I graduated. So I guess they knew my experience

Our ICU hires new ADN grads...which is why I am in the intern program there. The orientation period is one year long...16-24 weeks of preceptor training depending on strength and progression of new grad. No LPNS or

CNAs...only RNs and Nursing Students.

There is no problem whatsoever for new grad RNs going into the ICU. There is a very large learning curve though, (I say that from experience!) In my part of the country, LPNs are not used in the ICU.

At our hospital we have care associates, clinical associates and RN's . Our ICU is the total care concept, which means 2 techs to the whole floor. I don't think we have any lpn's anymore. They were phased out. We no longer have med nurses either.
