Hello all,
This is more of a vent than a story, but I was offended by a teacher the other day and thought I'd share it with the rest of you!
So I had a teacher's aide bring in a preK student who had a minor scratch on his arm from rubbing against something in the classroom. Teachers and aides always converse with me when they bring kids in and we pretty much go off on tangents and what not. This particular aide informed me some personal issues she was having. (this woman is about 300 llbs). She said that she was recently told she was borderline type 2 diabetic. She was so upset over the news. She told me that she didn't understand why they would tell her such a thing. She said "she watches her sugars and buys sugar-free everything" (which inside I told myself she probably doesn't know anything about carbs). I explained to her about carbs and how it effects insulin and blood sugar, ect. I also went over warning signs of type 2 diabetes, also mentioning the acanthosis nigracans (which this woman had and I could see it from across the room). It looked like the wheels were started to move in her head, and I could tell it was started to sink in a little that she MIGHT IN FACT, be borderlined diabetic. She then felt the need to make this comment - "Well I don't think there is anything wrong with me. It wasn't even a real doctor who saw me, it was just a nurse practitioner, she's just a nurse she doesn't really know anything. I think I'll go to an actual doctor to get a second opinion!"
I was offended by that comment. Does she not know that I AM A NURSE?? Yes I am not as advanced as an NP but I support NP's and found that extremely rude to say to a nurse.
Ugh. rude!

I say with that attitude she probably isn't proactive in her health since she shouldn't be so shocked by the NP making the comment. I would just try and brush it off, I know it's very hard to do. But guessing when she goes to make a Dr apt and get to fit the bill to hear the same information by a MD, she might then realize we do know quite a bit...

The bee-otch in me might have just responded that I would call a report on the child's condition to the REAL teacher when the student was sent back to the classroom. But it probably wouldn't be worth the time in the confessional.Don't let the ignorance of others get you down :)

I see people like this in my office all the time. I spend 30 mins educating them about the new dx and the risk factors and what they can do.
They get offended.
They ask to see the doc.
He looks then right in the eye and says "you're to fat eat less".
They ask to come back and see me.

LOL! Yes!
Well obviously it's been in the works for some time now if she's over weight. It's not like she just found out she had Type 1 Diabetes. She's probably in denial & doesn't want to accept it, even if she hears it from "a real doctor" she won't believe that doctor either & make up more excuses. Just got to feel sorry for her ignorance.

You can't fix stupid.
Stupid is as stupid does.
prepare yourself because once she is diagnosed, she will be in for blood sugar testing, I feel low, I feel high, how was I supposed to know, blah blah blah, you didn't tell me. etc
see where this is going..YOU ARE NOT TO TEACH HER.. let her learn from her "doctor"

If this woman said to me, "I don't understand why they told me I'm borderline type 2 diabetic", I would have responded "probably because you are borderline type 2 diabetic."
