I am just getting started and after reading here for a while I find that I don't really know what I am doing. :uhoh21: I want to be a nurse. I have wanted this all my life. I am just able to pursue it. I don't know the first thing to do. I just completed the MA program. I did this to help me understand what I would be in for. I also did it to have a job while in school.
Can anyone help me. I know I have some classes I need before I can even look at a nursing school and I am going to get started on that this fall, but after that, what? I was thinking maybe buy some books and start reading to help, is that a good thing to do?
I am so happy to be on this path finally!!! I have no family to support me. Both my parents have passed away and I am alone in this. So you all will be my out-let if that is OK:yeah:.......I am happy I found this site. A friend of mine told me about it. She said it helped her while she was in school and she told me how hard school can be. She said I would need support and this is a good place for it. I did not know if I could or even should join being I'm not a nursing student yet. But when I saw the forum for students I said I would and get the help I needed as I walk this road. Thanks for all you help....

The first thing you need to do is look into the schools in your area that you would be able to attend. Find out the application process, the pre-reqs you need to have done, and which program would be the best fit for you. Until you have a school nailed down, I don't think there is anything you can plan for.
I am looking at Belmont University. It is here in Nashville. I was trying to look online at the pre-reqs are. I did not see the list. Maybe I need to keep looking. I know it is the school I want to attend. I have the list of classes for the undergraduate program of study but I think that is once you are in the program. As for the classes I need to get into the program it does not say. I will try to call them tomorrow and talk with someone.

ITA. You need to figure out which school you want to go to and make an appt with a counselor there. They will tell you exactly what you need to know.
I wouldn't start reading anything just yet (unless it's a book about what nursing or nursing school entails)... You don't want to bog down your head with anymore details than necessary... You'll need that space once school starts! LOL
Good luck!!

Thanks Jennifer,
I plan to call them and do just that. Question what do you look for in the school you want to attend. I was just looking at schools here in my area but maybe I should look for other things? Just a thought.....

Well, you want to make sure they are approved by your State's Board of Nursing. It's also good to find out what the passing rate is for the NCLEX. Some schools have fairly high passing rates... others... not so much.
You will also need to decide which type of program you would like to do. LPN vs. RN... or ADN vs. BSN, etc. If you are thinking of a 2 yr degree, you may want to check into a community college in your area. They tend to be a bit less expensive and the hours are a bit more flexible. If you are thinking BSN... you may pay more (at a bigger University) and you will spend a little longer getting the degree. Even though an ADN is "a 2 yr program" it typically takes longer than that.
I'm personally going to a CC right now and hopefully will get my ADN in the next 3 yrs. (it's taking me 5 yrs total with pre-reqs and all)... once I finish that, I'm hoping my employer will pay for me to complete a BSN program... (I have a BS in another field).
Anyway... hope that helps some. You have a lot of thinking to do! LOL
Good luck to you!

I sure do.... It helps a lot. I know that I want my BSN but I may do a 2 year CC first. It may talk me longer but at least I will have something to start with. The university I was looking at has a 97.7% rate of passing the NCLEX. They are stat approved and it is very expensive. What were the pre-reqs that you had to take? I want to get started this fall and be in a program by next year or so.....

Here's a link to Belmont's curriculum

It looks like they have a fast track and accelerated program in addition to the traditional program
I'm sorry, from what it looks like, you'll need to apply somewhere near the end of the first year. But, like you already know, you'll have to call them to make sure

you need to read the information on these websites which were set up for people like you to get information about nursing and how to become a nurse:

Make an appointment with the school you are interested in and find out "exactly" what pre-reqs you need to take. Find out when you need to apply. How many applications they typically receive and how many are accepted. Also, consider applying at more than one school. I made this mistake, and didn't get in to the first school I applied to.
I would also strongly encourage you to consider going for your BSN first. You will spend almost the same amount of time anyway, so if you can swing it, I highly recommend it. I know that I want to continue my education, so it just seemed like the right thing to do. If you want to go for a masters, you will need a bachelors anyway.
Daytonite thanks for the links I will check them out today. Jennieb30 you are right. I need to call. I don't think I would do well in the fast track program.
unfbsn08 I think I should do the BSN first as you say. I know I want to get my MSN at some point so this would be the best way to go. :bowingpur
Thanks for letting me know that I should apply at more than one school. :yeah:I know I would have fallen with the issue of one and not being accepted than I would have to way so long to apply again.
