(So glad I stumbled across this website again after almost 6 years! I need to change my username because I am not an aspiring nurse anymore, I have been a nurse for almost 3 years! ?)
Anyway, I really do not want to take this new covid vaccine. I know I can’t be the only one who feels this way. Typically I am not an anti-vaxxer but something about this illness is making me think otherwise. For personal reasons I really do not want to take it when available at my hospital, but I’m afraid it will be mandatory. I am almost considering finding a new job if my hospital forces us all to take it. What a shame because I do like my job and wouldn’t know what else to turn to that isn’t nursing, because chances are most healthcare related places of employment will likely require all employees take it.
I want to use the excuse of it being against my religion but I already took the flu vaccine this year. I have nothing against the flu vaccine but didn’t necessarily want it, but my hospital practically FORCED everyone to take it unless they grant you an exemption. I’m afraid they’ll question me why I took the flu shot but cannot take the covid vaccine.
What do you guys think about this? Will you be taking the vaccine? I just want us to be able to make our own decisions about this. If patients can refuse medications, procedures, and treatments, why can’t healthcare workers do the same? I read in multiple articles it will not be required by the federal government but each state and employer can decide whether or not it will be mandatory.
And forget the $1500 “stimulus check” that may be offered if you take it. All the money in the world would not change my mind about taking the vaccine. I feel as though if you have to bribe people to take it, something is peculiar.
I don’t know why this is bothering me so much. It should be a choice in my opinion. But by telling a few friends about not wanting it I feel judged. I have worked with covid patients multiple times since I am one of the younger nurses who does not have any kids/am pregnant. I feel like week after week I was always chosen to go to the covid section. At first I was mad but now it doesn’t bother me. I am not afraid to be near covid patients. Luckily through all this time I haven’t caught it. I always tell people I’d rather catch it than get this vaccine. That’s how strongly I feel against taking the vaccine. All of my non-nursing who have had covid are covered and thriving. To me catching it isn’t the biggest deal but others have called me selfish because I could be spreading it to others. Why is it looked at as selfish for not wanting to inject something into MY body. #mybodymychoice
Am I thinking about this too much? What would you do?

Not only that but state after state makes access to THC ever more easy despite evidence that its long term use decreases cognition.
Your are missing the trees.....again. Smoking tobacco or weed (which I dread having becoming legal in my state) are not Contagious. You can't compare them to a virus. And if lockdowns are so ineffective, why do countries repeatedly resort to them? Are you smarter than the rest if the world who has been doing this for centuries because it actually works? Florida is in a holy mess and in top of it all, it's a free for all to get the vaccine as your Governor Refrigerator has a temper tantrum and denies science.

Wait! It's okay to use financial coercion on folks with student debt, but it's wrong to coerce nurses in hospitals to take a vaccine or lose their jobs. The situations are equivocal. And I still don't get it why you say you have $200,000 in debt but are making huge amounts of money hand over fist and you have to go to Wyoming to avoid a Covid vaccine and the scientists are dumb and not to be trusted but you would ascribe to believing a "scientific" bunch of businessmen robber barons in Barrington, Mass. and the vaccine is interfering with your "freedom" but Wyoming is freer than Florida and now you can't even go to Antarctica to be free because Covid is there and being around other people is a denial of freedom so just leave the rest of humanity behind and that will solve my pressing issue of being hog tied and forced to take a vaccine proven to be very safe but maybe not so effective and I don't want any treatment that's not 100% safe AND 100$ effective. Seems like what I am hearing:)

Maybe Covid will put me out of my misery first or I will be lucky enough to perish from a vaccine reaction.
This has just reached a level of ignorance that is indescribable.

I respect your perspective, but I disagree. As for my debt until a year ago I was making 60k with no benefits. Also, I racked up most of my debt (about 130K) on my ASN, BSN and over 300 credit hours in other undergrad stuff (Biology degree, pre Pharm ect when I was in my 20's and 30s). The rest is interest and credit cards. I do believe all three branches will be controlled by those with a left of center perspective. I may not be the "brightest" guy around but were I in charge of the D strategy it would be simple:
a. Overturn the filibuster.
b. Reform the Supreme Court by adding more seats to bring more balance and further important progressive goals.
c. Work to admit Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia into the Union.
d. Work for immigration report and allow family unification and greatly expand immigration.
e. Work for a direct election that supersedes the current electoral system.
f. Work for a "universal basic income" as a "set point" for those earning under a certain level.
g. Work for a "public option" that competed with and eventually supplanted the private system.
If I a mere simple PMHNP can envision this then I assure you that people exponentially smarter, more connected and ruthless than me will work to implement these items. I assure you they believe "my side" is every bit as deleterious and bad for America, as I believe their side represents capitulation to socialism and eventually China (saying we would probably do the same if the situations were reversed). I may as well be on the Enterprise with the Borg announcing "You will be Assimilated". I at least can recognize when I'm beaten.

Well, I you may have a point on debt forgiveness on student loans being coercion (although I would still take the deal). How about a PS5? For a PS5 I will both take the vaccine and a bit of Trump's bleach (sub lethal dose hopefully) on the same day.

Well, both my parents smoked 2-4 packs per day and I was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis (smoking related) as a young teenager and the MD even told my parents that "you do realize your killing your kid with all the smoking.". So we disagree on the smoking thing. It kills at least a half million each and every year. Also, as a PMHNP at least half my clients are experiencing MDD, GAD, and ADHD, and insomnia that is significantly worse due to their long term THC use. One of the hardest things I do is to try and get people to use less (or quit) THC. Most do not realize that every significant dosage adjustment downward is usually met with a 3-6 week periods of increased anxiety, insomnia, and loss of appetite. It takes much longer to get the "cognition" back and we really don't have good data to show that it ever really comes back (or at least completely). I took the flu vaccine for years, but it burns me that the MD's got to skip it and many of my coworkers "bragged" that they had their MD's "fake" their forms or forged them themselves. I think the vaccine is probably a great thing, I just don't like feeling compelled on pain of my job (and if I am fired or reprimanded I am required to report that to the Board when I renew and on my Liability Insurance and on my insurance credentialing forms). Plus my SO is telling me she will quit being an NP before taking the vaccine. At least it isn't an issue right now for us.

It’s hard to take you seriously on the topic of Covid vaccines. You have spent a large part of this thread bellyaching about the US turning into China due to your fear of a possible vaccine mandate for healthcare workers becoming reality sometime in the future. So you don’t want to lose your freedoms even if it’s just taking a vaccine to try to help combat a pandemic, but throw a little ? your way or a PlayStation, then you’re suddenly okay with the vaccine? You’ve been catastrophizing to the point where you even concocted an elaborate scenario that has you spending the rest of your days on some dusty road in some remote location... All that drama.. For what?
You said you make 25,000 a month? Perhaps buy that PS5? It would probably make your chosen ideological stance appear a bit more convincing.

Buying the PS5 would mean buying it from scalpers. I would take ten covid shot in the bum before enriching those SOB's who purchased all the PS5 stock largely with BOTS.

So basically, there are only frivolous reasons and unfounded fears for you not vaccinating against covid?
I'm wondering what agenda drives your remarks. I'm done responding.

Also, I don't particularly care if you take me "seriously" much of the time I am attempting to be of good humor. Consider, the last weeks with the loss of Trump and now Congress have been some of the worst in my life (up there with the death of my parents as I believe the consequences for our nation will be long lasting, perhaps eternal). Still, life goes on (until it doesn't) and I'm trying to find some positive aspects of the world in which I now find myself, me and the 70 million plus other people who oppose almost literally everything about the new government from lockdowns for Covid to other issues that will be forthcoming.

No agenda. I'm literally not saying anything I wouldn't say in person. When I worked in ICU some of the nurses would often say "for the love of God Myoglobin do you ever shut up?" You make Rush Limbaugh sound low key. In any case it is not my intent to offend. Also as to my reasons being frivolous, I am arguing for "self determination". Still, whether you like it or not probably 30 to 50% of health care workers will decline the vaccine if mandated and if all of us are fired good luck taking care of patients. I have a three month waiting list of patients as it is. My former ICU is so overburdened they still call me every few weeks to come back (I tell them I let my ACLS expire so that wouldn't be an option) they are in a bad way for RN's.

Since you're looking for reasons to not vaccinate it's unlikely that you'll perish from a vaccine reaction. Covid typically causes misery rather than putting people out of it.
