I have a problem

Long story short. I just found out today that all my pre req from my LPN school Mildred Elley will not be accepted at any Cuny school in nyc. They said they're not accredited. I said how could that be, I was able to get my nursing license. I don't know what I'm going to do.

    They may be talking about national accreditation such as ACEN and CCNE; most PN programs are not nationally accredited, but are BON approved.

    My LPN pre-req's were not transferred over; however, I went to a CC and all those pre-req's were accepted.

    None of my LVN coursework transferred because the school was not regionally accredited and the actual program lacked national nursing accreditation from the NLNAC. LPN/LVN programs do not need to be accredited in order for you to be granted licensure; they only need approval to operate by the board of nursing in the state where you reside.

    Just take the prerequisite courses at a community college. This is only a setback if you allow it to be. Good luck to you.

    This isn't uncommon. My LPN program is one of three in the entire state of Michigan that is accredited by ACEN (but it's at a university). So don't stress. Just keep in mind your goals.

    I have to do my pre-reqs again as well. It's best to just suck it up and get started. I've waited several years, and wish I would have started this process sooner. My suggestion is meet with your local colleges and see what they have to offer. While they won't accept my pre-reqs I do get "credit" for being an LPN and get over a year of the RN program knocked off. Good luck with whatever your choice.

    I feel like, having to take all my pre req over is a waste of a year. I'm in nyc and all the community colleges are run by cuny. There has to be another school that will accept my credits. I did not want to take out anymore loans for school. I was so looking forward to starting school in sept and it was affordable. Might have to go through excelsior.

    Excelsior is also going to require that you take prerequisite coursework. And with tuition of nearly $400 per credit hour, Excelsior can get pricey.

    It is highly unlikely that any legitimate nursing program will accept your credits from Mildred Elley. In the collegiate world, credits earned at unaccredited schools are usually not transferable or accepted for transfer credit by accredited schools.

    I knew my LVN "prereqs" wouldn't count as RN prereqs. My LVN school was private, likely for profit and I knew the classes wouldn't transfer.

    I completed my RN prereqs at a state community colleges, most of them I completed before LVN school and them a few I did after LVN school.

    The "prereqs" / "co-reqs" at the LVN school simply allowed me to obtain my LVN license.

    For the most part, LV/PN programs do not have to be accredited at all - they just have to be "approved" by the state in which they are located. Heck, here in TX, I think we only have 2 LVN "accredited" LVN programs (out of > 300) and both are part of a community college 'education ladder' program.

    I am so sorry that OP is having to deal with this. I know how discouraging it is.

    If you can not find a program that will accept these courses, then you will have no choice but to retake prerequisite courses at an accredited school.
