I pay for these classes and these people won't shut up

Published

They were lucky it was the last lecture of the quarter and the sunny weather put me in a good mood. I paid $400 for this A&P class and $300 for the book and these 4 people behind me would not shut up. I swear the entire lecture. And I know the teacher could hear them and see they weren't paying attention, but he doesn't do anything about it. I almost turned around and ripped them a new one.

I think some of them are in next quarters a&p 2 with me. If they do this next quarter, what do I saw to them, in a polite way, to let them know they need to shut up. Or should I address the professor?

I'm not looking to make friends, but I'm also not looking to make enemies either.

There was a whole table of girls who wouldn't stop talking, cheated off eachother ect. I was paying about $3500 for my anatomy class. I never said anything to them, they weren't worth the trouble and they weren't going to listen to me anyway (they don't even listen to the prof when she asked). You might just want to do something like turn around and just shush them. They may give you a dirty look but they'll get over it.

I've found if I sit in the front and center of a lecture hall/classroom/lab, I'm not distracted by the other students.

If you don't feel comfortable talking to the students directly, maybe you could mention it to your instructor after or before class, so he/she will make more of an effort to ask for those students' attention when he/she notices their volume increasing.

i know exactly what you mean .. keep in mind, alot of these chatterboxes are probraly fresh outa high school...eaither thr parents are paying for thr classes or thr gettin financial aid ...so since its not coming from thr pocket, they prob just dont care and are there just becuz thr "supose" to be .your best bet would be to go to the teacher and voice ur opinion. If that doesnt go as planned , try the department head .

It's happened to me on more than one occassion. I would first try the prof when you have privacy. If that doesn't work shhh them right in class loudly! Let's face it, these people are jerks and this is probably the only thing they will understand. Yes they 'may not be worth it' but you are there to study and they aren't. The he** with them. You have to look out for #1.

This is exactly where I sit in lecture, because for my 90 minutes I want to be completely focused on the professor and the board or the powerpoint. I am not there to socialize, there is plenty of time for that afterwards. I have friends in the class but I never sit with them. I meet them after. I don't even tolerate minor chats or passing notes if friends insist on sitting with me. What's the point of going to class if you're going to chit chat the whole time and not pay attention? Like when we were discussing Gram positive and negative bacteria in one lecture and one of those foolish chatterboxes asked the professor "Are these still examples of Gram positive bacteria?" when the powerpoint on the screen clearly said GRAM POSITIVE on the top of the slide  ...

Odds are that these chatterboxes never sit near the front of the room, try to scope out a seat far away from them in your next class! Seriously, get away - your grade is on the line.

Sadly, these chatterboxes are not younger than me. I'm 24. One may be my age, the others are around 30. And one is an LPN who thinks she knows it all so she probably fees she doesn't need to listen. She is also one who complained about getting a "B" on her test. I just looked at her like "Really?!"

I can't sit in the front because he does a powerpoint and it's too hard for me too see it(I have astigmatism and my contacts don't like to adjust to things that large and bright in front of me.) I sit second from the back row, I think I'll move to the 3rd, but that's as far down as I can go.

My professor is great, so if they do this next quarter(I believe most of them are in my class again next quarter), I'll tell him. And if they don't stop then I'm going to embarrass them and tell them to shut it in front of everyone! lol. I know other people can hear them also.

As other folks have said: Get to class early enough to be able to choose your seat. Take the one directly in front of the prof. Sit far away from the noisy (un-serious) folks. Establish a relationship with the prof, not the other students.

Because I could make eye contact with the prof, who could see by my expression when the noisy students were getting out of hand, I never had to have a confrontation.

I don't know...maybe it's just me...or the fact that I'm old and have no patience with rude behavior. I have no qualms about telling them to shut up. If they want to talk they can take it outside. I do sit up front in my classes. I hope they are not in your classes next semester but if they are I think I'd talk to the prof about it.

I know exactly how you feel. When I took a&p these two girls would chat the ENTIRE time..one time a woman raised her hand and said "excuse me" to the professor, turned to the girls and lectured them like they were little kids (they were acting like it! haha), apologized to the professor, and the girls actually stopped coming to class, only showing up for exams. It may have been extreme, but hopefully they learned a lesson.

I'm having the problem again in my chemistry class this semester..the class is huge, probably 200ish people, and these 3 girls sit in the front, talk and laugh and then ask questions that the professor just answered...they also laugh and joke with each other when they get 50's on the tests. It's really pathetic :-/

woeful, but the instructor is a milquetoast.

:twocents:

Why use all that subterfuge?

Is it possible she could, after class, tell the instructor in private and in a firm, but kind way, that there are disruptive students, and to request he stop the noise in his own classroom. He might not be smart enough to read her mind; sounds like he's not very bright when it comes to people-- no offense meant. So are you saying she should have a silent relationship with the prof.:lol2: Just exchange eye contact, but no words, huh. :smokin: Don't be so afraid of the professor that you can't even ask him to modify the environment for conducive learning. Why should she get up earlier to prevent the professor from doing his job. This website is tons of fun.
