Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I just completed a four year BSN program but because I can't pass Hesi, I was told by my proffesors that I could either get my LPN or go to accelerated program. I'm very dissapointed but I'm trusting that God has a better plan for me and it doesn't stop here. I'm interested in taking the LPN test because I have spent so much time studying for my Hesi Exam, that I feel like that knowledge shouldn't just go down the drain. However, I'm from MD and I've been told by several people that LPN are very limited in their work and mostly just work in nursing homes. I really would like to work in a hospital setting if possible. I'm also interested in knowing what the LPN test is like, because this is all new to me. Please share your thoughts and any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

I wouldnt exactly call being an LPN "settling"..... LPNs are slightly limited, it depends on the area. Their job duties differ a little from an RN. I know personally, that where I am, LPNs are mostly employed by the LTCs and REhabs..the hospitals are not actively recruiting any new LPN grads in my area.

Have you looked into specialized tutoring? Id want to use that BSN to its full potential if I were you.

Find out what you need to do in order to pass the HESI, and do it. If you've succeeded for four years throughout your degree, you must have the knowledge. Perhaps you need tutoring/assistance to learn test-taking strategies for the exam.

I would love to take Hesi again, but they will not allow me. I took it 8 times my last score was 880 and I needed a 900 to pass. My other classmates passed on the 7th time and technically that was suppose to be the last time. It upsets me because I do have loans to pay and can't afford to still be working as a tech, that is why I'm looking in to become a LPN so I can at least make more money.

You could possibly work in a clinical setting. I do, I work in a gorgeous place, the doc I work with is totally wonderful, I love her specialty, and the patients are also wonderful. Did I mention I love my job?

I never thought I'd be happy working anywhere but the hospital. I took this job, and was completely surprised. Yes, it's not RN money, but the money is decent. I didn't become a nurse to make piles of $$. I'm happy doing what I do, and my knowledge is appreciated.

Your mileage may vary.

Im confused... They would make you do an entire program over ? I think that I would take the lpn but keep working with them to find a way for you to 'remediate' so that you can sit for the nclex. In our program if we fail we just have to do 'remediation' and take it again ...and again. Good luck. you are SOOOOO close

This is ridiculous! Oh dare them ask you to do another program after being successful in a 4 years program. I would sue the hmmm..out of them. You need to speak to a lawyer, the Hesi is not a true measurement of who will pass NCLEX. I did not do the Hesi and pass the NCLEX with 75 questions. How dare them!!!

Go ahead and take the LPN test, then take it from there. You want to come out of this with something. You can decide on your next step once you at least have some means of employment. Better to "settle" for an LPN license than to be someone who finished nursing school but did not graduate or get an RN license. Good luck.

Oh, and when people question your situation, smile at them and explain that you attended a very expensive LPN program. There are others who have done the same.

Unfortunately, my school doesn't offer any remediation. Trust me I would do anything just to have the option of taking my boards. I spent over 100,000 dollars at that school, the loan companies want their money and now I have to have another plan to start paying them. My mother has already talked to some Nurse Attorneys and they are looking into this. In the mean time I'm determined to make the best out of this situation and am going to trust God to work this out. However, I just feel like I might as well take the LPN test and let all that studying have been in vain.

What state are you in? Did you make sure it is allowed for you to take the LPN boards?

I'm in the state of Maryland.
