what do I do? failed hesi have to settle for lpn!!

Published

I just completed a four year BSN program but because I can't pass Hesi, I was told by my proffesors that I could either get my LPN or go to accelerated program. I'm very dissapointed but I'm trusting that God has a better plan for me and it doesn't stop here. I'm interested in taking the LPN test because I have spent so much time studying for my Hesi Exam, that I feel like that knowledge shouldn't just go down the drain. However, I'm from MD and I've been told by several people that LPN are very limited in their work and mostly just work in nursing homes. I really would like to work in a hospital setting if possible. I'm also interested in knowing what the LPN test is like, because this is all new to me. Please share your thoughts and any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

I didn't mean to offend anyone I think LPN are phenomenal!! Its just that I went to school for 4 years to get a BSN degree and I'm very dissapointed that I will not be able to receive my degree that I worked so hard for. I want to say thank you for all the support and understanding. To all the LPN and RN out there, thank you especially for your feedback and advice. I realize that at the end of the day the most important thing is to give my best me to everyone I come in contact with and continue to always strive for excellence!!

I'm glad you are talking to an attorney. The purpose of HESI is to identify weaknesses to work on before taking the NCLEX. Nursing schools have misused and abused HESI as a way to weed out students..at the very end of their nursing school career after they have invested tens of thousands of dollars and paid their instructors salaries. Nursing schools should be confident of their quality, and if students have passed the exams, courses, and clinical standards the school has required the school should graduate the students and allow them to sit for NCLEX. Administer HESI only as a means to identify weaknesses to study before boards, oh yeah, like the purpose of HESI is.

Whew! Vent over! You are not alone OP, although I personally passed HESI I have read threads of students stuck in the same bs as you. All the best!!

I would love to take Hesi again, but they will not allow me. I took it 8 times my last score was 880 and I needed a 900 to pass. My other classmates passed on the 7th time and technically that was suppose to be the last time. It upsets me because I do have loans to pay and can't afford to still be working as a tech, that is why I'm looking in to become a LPN so I can at least make more money.

I would fight it frankly. Is it a statewide rule you have to have a 900 to pass, or is it set by this school? I would definitely look into this. Did you go into the program with the understanding (before you began the program) that you had to score a 900 on HESI? Is it all in writing. This sounds ridiculous to me. Also, you are correct LPN is settling. You spent 4 years for a BS and sounds like the school is just trying to protect itself and up their pass percentage. You should have the right to take the NCLEX and see if you truly have the knowledge and are safe to practice as an RN.

I passed my HESI the 2nd time, but i passed my NCLEX too the 2nd time! So no HESI isnt a good predictor that you will do well in the NCLEX

I think you need to seek some more formal advice. Others took 7 attempts to pass? Is this HESI exit thing a new requirement at your school. So you would be an RN with a BSN still.

I don't wish to diminish LPNs but I would be on fire about this. You just spent 4 years in college for a two semester nursing qualification.

Even if they don't do remediation did they ever provide you with a study breakdown to help direct your revision? What kind of tests were they giving you guys through school that meant people had to be taking HESI 7 times? Unless you barely passed your classes ...all of you...that seems crazy.

Also, this is an external indicator of how you will do. Does your college, that you paid a whopping sum to, have no faith in their own ability to evaluate you? They had 4 years to do so.

Sorry for going off but I think this is awful...for you.

By the way we have the ATI thing in my school. We take it at the end of every course/semester. They don't mess around -- but the school only uses it to as an external check. Although, I believe they won't do your NCLEX paperwork if you fail.

Still, they are on top of us about this from day 1. None of the last minute rubbish. Ohhhhh I am so annoyed for you I must go breathe!

By the way. Take the practical nurse exam and smoke it! But do not sign anything your school gives you about ONLY putting you forward for that.

This is blowing my mind. Is the hesi tied into your grade andyou cant pass the course without it? I have never taken that test and I'm a rn. Is it like ati we took those and we had to take a final one that was 40% of our final grade so it was very important but alone couldnt keep. Us from sitting for the nclex. Is it that the school pwont report that you completed the program to the bon? This just dosnt seem right.

I don't know if you are comfortable saying, but I'd love to know what university that is. No worries if you cannot say.

What about going thru excelsior? See how many credits they will give you. If you have completed half an rn program they will accept you. You would have to take test for nursing classes. but you could probably pass them pretty easily right out of school.

Yeah, this really bugs me. If I were you if they don't give you your degree I would not only sue the school for every penny you payed for classes, books, housing, but your time, years wasted, and projected income!

They are doing this for one reason only and that is to protect their % for NCLEX pass rate. They must not feel very secure regarding their program or the students they pick if they have to screen in this manner.

I would also love to know the name of the school.

The entire thing sounds very underhanded. I am sure if a lawyer got even a sniff of this they would love to take your case. And I am just as sure that the school will be singing a different tune if a good lawyer presents a valid arguement. Please keep us updated!

I can't believe they are not letting you through!! This is an awful situation and I am very sorry you have to go through it. As an LPN who is almost done with RN program I will tell you this-there is a BIG difference between LPN and RN,BSN...you deserve to have more than an LPN license! I hope you pursue the legal route because there is a lot of money involved here and I don't think you should let your school get away with this.

Let me ask you, is your school telling you they are able to give you permission to test for LPN to your state board of nursing? I thought you had to go through a specific LPN program for that? Or are they telling you to go to an LPN program?

Good Luck

Yeah, I'm curious to know what school this is too. What kind of an education did you get for $100k when you failed HESI 8 times and it took the others 7 tries to pass? I just don't get it.

If the school had educated you properly you should have passed the HESI the first or second time.
