I ♥ downstaffing!

Published

I managed to get put on call 4 days on this rotation, so when my next scheduled day comes around I will have had 13 days off straight.

What other field can you work in where you get random days off? I love it!!! I work swing so I plan my work days accordingly and get all my "chores" done early in the day. When that magical little phone call comes in at 1:30 pm and I hear the words "on call"...woop woop! Its like someone just handed me 8 hours of free time.:yeah:Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my job. I just love getting to stay home a liiiitttle bit more.

Does anyone else get this excited?

Yes, it's like I won the lottery but not really. And that feeling of going back to sleep and turning off or setting my alarm for 3 hours later is amazing.

Specializes in Cardiac.

I don't get put on call that often, but when I do, it's wonderful! I worked for the first 4 hours of my shift the other night and was sent home for the following 8 hours on call. On my third night in the schedule, it was a welcome break!

must be nice to have a bunch of money laying around!

Specializes in Acute Mental Health.

I would love it, but it never happens to me. I would hate my check though. I need the $$, but yay for you that you can enjoy the day! It's always a good feeling to have that.

Our union has worked out that we still earn our PTO on days we've been called off and we have the option of not using it if we like.

I didnt find that out for a long time too. On call got much more exciting after that!

Yes I love it! I actually got cancelled yesterday. I work swings also so it's one more eveing I get to be with my family. Also it happens at most once per pay period, so I don't get cancelled very often.

Are you a nurse? I don't know of too many licensed nurses who get called off, who is providing the care?

Personally, I want to take time off when I want not ordered to.

Specializes in School Nursing.

When I worked at the hospital, I always volunteered to be called off if whoever's turn it was wanted to work. It was always a nice little surprise! I know many licensed nurses who get called off regularly when census is low and the hospital wants to save $$. Not at all uncommon.

Specializes in Telemetry, Case Management.

When I worked at the hospital, I was tickeld to get cancelled!!! My DH would gripe, but I think the most I ever got cancelled in a year's time was 10 days. Yes it was some money lost, but was sorely needed off time!!!!!!!

I don't have money laying around, but I am very very careful with what I have.

I love getting called off.

You can usually pick up hours later, if you really need them.
