After 41 years and 8 months and at age 62 1/2, I have decided to hang up my stethoscope! And it feels good to have made the decision.
I remember when I first came to Allnurses, during an period of burnout in 2009. Lots of folks were a great help. I made it 10 more years.
So much has changed during my years of practice.I think that one of the best advances I have seen was the development of the wound vac. We were all skeptical at first and putting a wound vac on in the beginning was a challenge. I haven't applied one for the past 5 years, but when I did it was so much easier than all the cut and fit.
People ask what are you going to do. I have a whole list of what I want to do including what ever I want, when I want to. And most importantly- it won't be my problem any longer! I ordered a tee shirt that says just that.
I thank God that I was allowed to do what I did for so long.

Retirement rocks. Have fun! Go new places, play with your family, find new hobbies. Sleep late. Take naps. Read.
And, know that the job is well done.
I described the feeling as having hit a wall. Love the turkey timer analogy. Yes, I was definitely popped. Completely agree with the rest of your post too. I also don't hate snow and bad weather anymore because I don't have to go out in it.
OP: Congratulations. Retirement is the best. thing. ever.
At one point in my career I was afraid that I was going to die while working. I would cry most mornings while I drove to work.
I am fortunate in that my husband and I have managed our money well. We lived in our starter home for 38 yrs.
I understand that some cannot retire, but I didn't want to be dead rather than retired.
Wow.....I have decided to retire this year as well. I will turn 61yo in April and will have been in the biz for 40 years! I am leaving mostly due to the bullying in my workplace which unfortunately includes by my NM. Just can not stand being "micro-managed" and belittled anymore!!! It was getting so bad before I made this decision that my BP was extremely elevated. Going to work at a job you have loved for so long to be ruined by this sort of thing is so very sad. I spoke to a lawyer who shared this happens too many times to count....generally as you get closer to the time you might retire. Age-ism but they are Very Careful so you find yourself just wondering what happened. One day things are swell the next in the toilet where you fear to be fired or worse.
I will leave it to karma.

My Illinois license I’ll keep active as I live in Illinois and may want to do something as a volunteer.
I have a license in Missouri also but not renewing. Going inactive.
Just after I made this decision, my newest grandson spent 11 days in the hospital with RSV at age 2 1/2 weeks. I plan to babysit for him 3 days a week once my daughter goes back to work. At least until he is a little older.
