Hygiene More specific facial hair

I have just been accepted to the undergraduate program at ETSU. I have not started classes yet but I am very excited and looking forward to starting my classes. My question is this every male nurse I have ever seen in real life and on TV do not have facial hair, is this the norm? I know that major league baseball has a rule that there is no facial hair allowed during any game. The reason I ask this is I have had a mustache basically since I could grow one. I have only shaved it off twice in my life once for a former girlfriend and once for my wife. I am wondering do most medical facilities have no facial hair rules or will I be lucky and not have to shave it off? I do keep it trimmed regularly though. I will be staying in the NE Tennessee area or Greenville, South Carolina areas if this matters. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I've worked with lots of male nurses who have facial hair...even some in surgery (they wear a beard cover thingie). Maybe it depends on where you work or what school you'll go to. Those places would be where you should get the infor

I have a beard and nobody has said "boo" about it. Also, the MLB doesn't prohibit facial hair, just some teams. :smokin:

Check your school's dress code for clinicals. It will have specific information about what is and isn't allowed for students, and will govern what you can and can't do (re: facial hair) while you're in school. Most employers (in my experience) have more lenient dress codes than nursing schools do, so you'll probably have more flexibility once you're through school.

Nursing school rules for what's ok to wear/have on your face/hands/arms are sometimes VERY rigid. Do check with your school.

Thanks everybody for the information. I will be calling my adviser tomorrow and I will ask that question also. I really do appreciate the information. I will also let you all know what I find out.

...you need to be aware that a N95 mask might be a problem, depending on the shape/spread of your 'tache...

I have to shave off my beard for the yearly fitting - but grow it back again. If I ever need to wear one at work, I'll it shave then...

The schools have to follow the guidelines of their strictest clinical sites, which is why, I think, that they have what seems to be really restrictive policies.

How do you explain the Red Sox? :D

I think that it may be program specific. I know that in our program, facial hair is permitted as long as it is neat and kept short. The clinical instructor is the one who makes the decision of what constitutes neat and short.

Hope this helps.
