I'm starting human anatomy next week, and would love to get a sticky started to keep each other sane. I'm a bit nervous about starting this class, as I really need an A, but work full-time and will also be taking abnormal psych. It's going to be a lot of work!
Let's help each other out through this forum! :welcome:
So, when are you starting, where are you taking it, and how are you feeling?
k wait what?? did you just say cadaver?? as in dead person??? what??? somebody please clarify that for me please. ok
Yep :) He died 6 months ago, 96 male cause of death was CHF.
I may try the mask. Also wonder if swiping some vicks under my nose would help. I am not sure if it's from inhaling the chemicals or just the smell alone triggers the headache. I'm not a big fan of masks but beats dealing with a migraine. I was going to ask my instructor next lab if he had any ideas also.
I heard from another student that she heard the nursing students do the dissecting. But that could be a rumor. The school gets one new body a year.
I took a cadaver dissecting class for anatomy last semester (and failed, so I'm retaking this semester - but the failing was my own fault so don't panic guys!) and while it was neat to see everything in real life, I thought it made things a lot more difficult - because almost NOTHING is like it is in the book. Go figure.
Anyway, taking anatomy (my school does both as a separate class, in any order - did very well in physiology without taking anatomy first) again this semester at a different university that doesn't do the cadaver dissection, but we still have one to view in class, which is more than enough, I think. Doing the actual dissection was time-consuming - you dissected during lab hours and came back during office hours to actually learn - it was a mess.
Anyway, in my point of view the cadaver is an extra - so don't panic or feel like you're going to be behind if you don't have access to one. In fact, you might want to count your lucky stars because finding all the stuff for the brachial plexus is a nightmare...or at least it was for me. The brachial plexus is the bane of my anatomy existence
Anyhow, hello Anatomy Club and I'm happy to be a part of you once again I wish us all luck!

I just finished A&P I & II over the summer so so don't be nervous, you will all do fine and buckle in and study hard.
I had my first class last night, it was our lab night, and geez this is going to be hard! We don't really follow the text at all, and it seems a little disorganized. We have a cadeaver as well, and I'm soooo not looking forward to that because of the smell. I'm going to get gloves and a mask for sure!! Good luck, everyone!
I now have a migraine though due to the smell and if this occurs every lab, I don't know what I'm going to do other then down pain pills before class to thwart off the pain before it kicks in
It doesn't smell in the lab itself, but the room the cadaver is kept is small and I don't think has enough ventilation so the smell is overpowering.
The best way to keep from being sickened by the smell is to get some Mentholatum, little green tub with white wrapping in any pharmacy or Wal-Mart, and put a dab under each nostril. Refresh this every few hours you are around the cadavers.
Works...been there.....done that.....
well i had my first class and the instructor didn't even mention that students received a's. i'm so glad that i stuck with only 12 units this semester.
we are starting with anatomical studies, organ systems, and homeostasis. next we move into cells & tissues and then just tissues. i feel a little overwhelmed because we don't even have our books yet and the power point lectures range from 68 pages up into the hundreds. at least we have nice color slides.
we have a quiz every week and lab homework due each week as well.
