2013-2014 HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program

Published

I know it is entirely too early but I wanted to get a thread going for all of you who are planning to apply for the NSP this upcoming year. I know it is becoming more and more popular and there are always questions and people wanting to share experiences and such so I hope this thread will become helpful! I have signed up to get the alert for when the application is available for the 2013-2014 FY and hope to meet others who will be applying as well.

I really don't know how they are going about picking people either. Because it seems like its all over the regions now, and people have different EFCs and GPAs. Did you guys that got the scholarship submit your application early? Because I submitted mine pretty late! My EFC is 0, GPA 3.65, Texas, no credit checks yet =/

I don't think they are going down the list by GPA. I have not received an email yet. My GPA is 4.0, my EFC is 0 and my school tuition is relatively low. My friend however, with a 2500 EFC and a lower GPA than me already got an email.

So hopefully I will get one soon!!

Its really hard to see a trend..I was awarded and my credit is spotty as well.

No idea how they're doing it... I submitted on the very last day.

I'm nearly positive that your credit has nothing to do with it. As long as you haven't defaulted on a federal loan (like school loans, etc.) or some other court ordered payment (child support...) then you should be fine. Having a bunch of credit card debt or having missed payments shouldn't matter, as long as those payments weren't going to a government entity. That's my understanding, at least.

Also, still wondering about the location of folks who say that there are lots of qualifying facilities near them. I'm in central Virginia, and there's basically nothing within 3 hours. I don't have kids yet, so I'm willing to relocate, but I'm just wondering where the likely places are that I might wind up....

I'm confused about the difference between NHSC jobs that are actually listed on the jobs site and the list of shortage areas that have scores attached. As far as I can tell, there are way fewer actual NHSC jobs listed than shortage areas. For example, for my specialty (psych NP) there is only one NHSC listed job in California. However, if I look up HPSA by county then there are a ton that are listed (with scores) in CA for the psych specialty. I'm confused about the difference between the two.

I received an email last week about being selected for an award. I sent in the forms and my bank info. I also called to get some clarification on a question I had. The rep told me that we would hear back in a couple of weeks. I'm just wondering when we'll actually get the money because my school starts on September 23, but I'm pretty sureI 'll have to have everything paid way before then. There's something in the guidance about all awards being disbursed by November 30. I'm just a little confused lol.

I'm confused too because I have to have tuition fees paid by the beginning of September, and I don't think we get our money until November. Does that mean we have to take out a loan, and then the scholarship pays our tuition directly to the school and we give the money back? Wondering if anyone can clear this up. =)

I'm glad to know that I am not the only one confused. :) My next step is to contact my financial aid/billing office to find out when tuition and fees have to be paid. Then, I'll call HRSA again to see if I can give me more info on when I can expect the money to be reflected in my aid package. If it's much later than when tuition is due, I guess I'll have to take out a loan until I get the money, which just sounds like a headache. I'm still not sure how that whole them paying back the loan for us works. I have so many questions, but grateful for the award nonetheless :).

anyone received scholarship from tx. I'm still patiently waiting that I get it!!

Maybe it is by order the application was in? Did everyone who has gotten it so far make the first deadline?

For people that are confused about when they are getting the scholarship and if you will have to take loans out to meet your tuition deadline, i think you can talk to your financial aid office and tell them that you are a recipient and that they will be giving out the award on a certain date, they may just wait it out and not charge you late fees or go through the trouble of taking out loans etc.

And YES someone from Texas did receive the scholarship already!!
