Hi my fellow Nursing Students
I want to know how old were you when you started Nursing school. RN's and LPN's are welcome to answer.
I'm in my early 30's, married with three babies, ages five and under. I'm a little nervous and worried that I may have started a little late at following my dream to become a nurse.
Thanks everyone:D
As others have said, being older is often not a problem. I was nineteen when I started nursing school, but was thirty when I started respiratory school. There are many what some would call nontraditional students entering nursing as a second or third career or simply starting later on in life.
Even though I started when I was 54 and had been out of school for 35 years I was disappointed at the others who took it for granted that if they were to not pass a class they could always take it over again. I did not have the $$ to take over again and made it through in three years missing only one day. I do admire those who have children at home and those who even have to work too. My husband was my saving grace. This to all who manage to graduate and love what they do as much as I do!!!!!
Started my LPN program a month before I turned 38 graduated and licensed a few months after turning 39 My children were 5 and 15 when I started.
Started my LPN to RN program a few months after turning 42 and graduated and licensed a few months after turning 44. My children were 9 and 18 when I started.
I'm going back now for my RN to BSN, should graduate at 46. They will be almost 14 and almost 23 when I finish.
Started VN classwork exactly 10 days ago at age 50 - assuming I survive the experience I'll be walking & getting pinned with my class in December 2014 at age 52. No kiddos, no SO, one surviving sib out of the cohort & both parents are now serving Odin in Valhalla. Ahem.
Figure I'll shoot for a BSN once my financial batteries are recharged a bit, then relocate out of state & work on an MSN/FNP cert. Ultimately I hope to work primarily in hospice - did a year and a half in LTC as a CNA.

I'm 32 with 2 kids, almost 6 and almost 8. Started pre-reqs right before turning 30. Started the BSN program right before turning 32. I'm the oldest in the traditional program and the only one with kids. As far as I can tell, it's rare they get traditional students with kids. Their accelerated/second degree program they get more with kids, and many are about my age and older. The way I see it, I'll be 33 whether I earn a degree or not. I'd rather earn a degree. And that goes for any age. My next stop will be a masters degree, but not right away. I'll get older with or without the masters degree. I'd rather have it.
