Hi everyone! I am just wondering how much fresh nursing grads with a BSN degree make. I started a post earlier asking what nursing students make and from the responses it seems like they dont make much at all. Makes me wonder what a nurses salary really is.
I work at a Magnet hospital in Pennsylvania. I work weekend days, I make roughly around $34.00 and hour. I also work quite a bit of over time as well, we are so short staffed that most of my OT is double pay. So right now I'm doing pretty well. I've been there about 2 years now. New grads BSN or ADN, make exactly the same. I have my BSN, I believe they start out at about 24-25 an hour, with shift differential.
The other issue gonnaB37nursedoc is that you currently make $17 but I'm assuming you've worked in your field for a while. I have a non-healthcare BA and earn $15/hour. I'm great at my job. I don't want my bosses job. However because I live in a small city and there aren't a lot of opportunities for advancement, I'm at the top of my pay grade at $15.
$25 - 27 is starting pay for a new grad nurses. Once you have more experience it can lead you to more, and better paid, opportunities.
Nursing isn't the lottery, but healthcare is one of the few areas where women have substantial career opportunities.
In AZ, no difference in pay for BSN vs. ADN where I work. New grads here have been between $23/hr and $30/hr. Average is around $25/hr. Some of the hospitals are only hiring BSN's now and even if you already work at my hospital but want to change units, you must have a BSN to transfer. Having your BSN may help you find a job sooner. Good Luck!

A new grad in Chicago will start at $25-27 in the hospital. Chicago hospitals are also becoming increasingly BSN focused, so you are likely to become employed much more quickly.
Plus you get pm, night, and weekend differentials.
So, right now you are looking at a salary increase of ~$16-20,000 increase per year, and that's before the differentials. Not too shabby.
