How much do new BSN nursing grads make?

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

Hi everyone! I am just wondering how much fresh nursing grads with a BSN degree make. I started a post earlier asking what nursing students make and from the responses it seems like they dont make much at all. Makes me wonder what a nurses salary really is.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.
Anyone share the hourly rate in SoCal ?
It depends on which county in Southern California.

Orange County and San Diego County: high $20s to low $30s per hour

Los Angeles County: high $20s to mid $30s per hour

San Bernardino and Riverside Counties: high $20s to low $30s per hour

The wages should be much higher when one takes the ridiculously high cost of living into account, but wage deflation has been occurring in southern CA over the past three to five years due to recessionary forces.

salary.com is pretty good source for current pay info. According to them about $27 an hour is the starting rate in Chicago, which doesn't include healthcare deductions, figure a few dollars less once that's taken out (or even more than a "few"). If you're in an area where you have an advantage with a BSN for hiring then you do sort of make more than an ASN, since no job=no money. Although that varies by region, my hospital has had a hiring freeze on BSN's for 5 years now, we only hire ASN new grads.[/quote']

Is this a typo??? Your hospital hires Associates over Bachelors?

Why are you concerned about how much nurses make. A new grad BSN is typically going to earn lower middle-class or middle class paychecks. If money is what you want you should have gone into investment banking.

Yes, because we're all volunteers here who don't have financial commitments.

It's totally reasonable to consider salary when choosing a career.

Yes, but are the earnings not obvious? There is a pretty consistent ball park range.

Have you read the entire thread? Because I note a roughly $15/hr range which is pretty significant. Cost of living will vary but it doesn't always balance out to the same earning power.

And it's still not a priori knowledge- ya have to ask or look it up at some point which is what the OP is doing.

Its not? Its just like anything else, dependent on geographical location and setting. That is what varies the payscale. It is a ball park figure and its common sense that BSNs aren't starting off over 70k except in some extreme and rare circumstances that isn't at all representative of the norm. And they are making generally at least 40k with the exceptions on the other end of the spectrum. There is your 15 dollar an hour range.

How about San Antonio?

I give up. Asking about potential salary is completely appropriate, and just about everyone in this thread (including myself) has pointed out to the OP that it will vary based on location. I'm utterly confused as to why you have a problem with the OP asking this question.

Definitely disagree that RN's make low middle class salaries. Do you know the brackets that each social class fits into? With experience, overtime, or NP, a nurse can be at or above upper middle class.

This is definitely a reasonable question to ask about a profession one is interested in. There are definitely variables that will affect the answer though, such as location and place of employment.

40k-50k a year is low middle class...which is what a fair amount of new grad nurses make. And we aren't talking about NPs we are talking about new grad BSN

Did you even read the OP? Clearly states new grad BSN starting pay. Which is often around 40-50k...lower middle class....
