How much do new BSN nursing grads make?

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Hi everyone! I am just wondering how much fresh nursing grads with a BSN degree make. I started a post earlier asking what nursing students make and from the responses it seems like they dont make much at all. Makes me wonder what a nurses salary really is.

In Nevada, a BSN nurse does not make more, but the pay ranges from $38 - and up depending on experience. I make about $56/hr per diem critical care, night shift and weekends.

Our state varies I mean working as a Tech I worked in a few hospital's. Some have even pay as a diploma, ADN/ASN nurse...making $25-$28 an hour is the average I see a lot. Add in differential some places can start out at $32-$34 an hour. Believe hospital I work at gives the BSN nurses an extra $1.50-$2.00 an hour. I mean no real incentive to become a BSN with that, but most hospital's only hire BSNs so there's that incentive ha.

Most LPNs also are about $20-$25 an hour where I live. Depends a lot on the facility some could possibly make less.

Don't forget to factor in cost of living! That makes a huge difference. There are a number of calculators online that will compare salaries from different areas and tell you which one is really better, ie $25/hr in Arizona might be a better salary than $35 in LA because your going to be paying twice as much for an apartment in LA!

Also, what unit you work on will play a role. Generally the higher the patient acuity, the more the pay. You arent going to get paid as much for handing out meds in a nursing home as you will for titrating vasoactives in a SICU for patients getting $100,000 surgeries!

Good example of the role unit plays in your pay! Night shift in a ICU in a lv 1 trauma center is probably going to pay the most, but you definitely earn that extra pay (especially as a new grad)

As everyone else has said, it can really vary based on location, competition and if the hospital is unionized. I worked at a hospital in MI at made $27 base and this is on the lower end for the state (my PRN pay was $40/hr). I just moved to NC and took a pay-cut, now I'm making around $24 base. PRN in my area is about $28. Most people I know that moved to this area from bigger cities took a pay cut, so if you're hoping to make more look for those areas or for good sign on bonuses.
