I work in SW Virginia, fairly rural area with a nursing shortage and a lot of turnover. (I'm an LPN working towards my RN) I've noticed a lot of nurses where I work have at least 1 other job part-time. I wondered if that was a national trend. So: my question to RNs & LPNs out there: Do you have a second job in nursing? and if so, why? and most importantly, does the fatigue from working two jobs affect the quality of your work?
I would really like to know-appreciate any responses:nurse:

i have worked 2 jobs several times during my career and my marriage.
When the kids were small I did 2 part time jobs for braces, and glasses etc. Part time at both jobs allowed me the flexibility I needed but no benefits.
When I first graduated from RN school I worked Full time at a hosptial and Part time in ECF as a nursing supervisor.
WHen the factory my husband worked in closed I worked full time at one hospital and flexed at the other.
I will never do this again, one job is plenty>
Nursing is my 2nd career, my "fun" job because I want to, job. I love each and every second of it. I think because I don't have to work as a nurse, I am much happier knowing that if the job doesn't work out, I still have my full time job that supplies me with my benefits, 401K, etc until if/when I find the right job for me in nursing. It's a great feeling that I can honestly say "I don't need this job, but they need me" Not being cocky, fully aware that everyone can be replaced, but its much better knowing you don't need the job as much as the job needs you than vice versa.
I work full time for as a health claims analyst and work part time as an LPN in a SNF/Short-term rehab.
I work more than fulltime as a nurse, picking up overtime most weeks, (but only enough to stay under the next tax-bracket) and I also work with a Govt organised youth group as a training facilitator and writing training programmes. I arrange my days off in a group so I can do my second job in a block of a few days at a time. I am also studying another degree part time.
In about 3 months Rugby season starts again and I will probably be shanghaid into coaching again. Then there is time ./c the kids, etc...I guess I will sleep when I'm dead. LOL
I typically work three 12-hour nights shifts on an ortho unit, but I also pick up another 12-hour shift at least every other week. Between the recent economic downturn and the hiring of four new RN's on my unit, I wasn't able to schedule any overtime for the month of December. Therefore, I am interviewing for a registry position with a competing hospital. Working in the registry will take me out of my comfort zone and force me to learn new skills and hone the ones I already possess...which is ALWAYS good in challenging economic times.
I have a full-time weekend job, which involves working two 12-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday and getting paid for 32 hours. Since this weekend job enables me to have 5 days off in a row, I have a part-time PRN job during the week, basically picking up two to three shifts on weekdays.
A good number of the nurses in my area have more than one gig at a time.
Well I am a newbie, but as soon as I get the hang of my job now then yes I plan on getting another part-time/prn job. It doesn't have to be in nursing. I was an insurance rep before so I know all of the coding and billing side of healthcare. I want to get my masters and want to save money for a rainy day so I work part-time at the job I have now so I can go to school full-time.
I don't work two jobs now due to being in grad school but I used to and I've been a part of both the nursing and non nursing second job set.
I've always worked nights so my second job has always been my day job. My best friend runs a construction company so before I moved whenever he was shorthanded I'd work for him. Then for about 6 months I worked 7p-7a in a busy ER, and then 3 days a week worked in a Pediatrician's office. This was mainly my resume rather than the money I could have picked up OT at the hospital and made better money than I did at either job.

I work m-f 8 til 4 right now, so no time for a 2nd job. But if I was doing 12 hour shifts 3days a week, I probably would work a PRN or registry job.
