How many of us 30 somethings are out there?

Published

I am just curious. I am 37 and will be taking my last pre-req in January for the nursing program at my local community college. I have noticed many people here are over 30, so I wanted to just blurt out the question. How many of us 30 somethings are making a career change into Nursing?

I'm 37 and making a career change, but I still work in an office for now.

I will be 32 in December. I work full time and have two kids and a husband. I just started my pre-reqs over the summer. I took two classes and will be taking AP1 and algebra in the fall. It's a long way to go.

I'm 31 with three boys ages 1, 4, and 6. I start my pre-req's in a few weeks and I'm very nervous. Most nervous about a&p. any advice would be very welcomed!!!! good luck everyone.

A&P was the class that effectively got me interested and confident enough in science classes to continue through where I am today. There's a lot of material, sure, but try to look at A&P for what it is: A fascinating education of the complex physical workings of the human- something, by the way, that very few people have any idea about. If you're lucky your school might have a cadaver lab which is the only way to truly view all those muscles, nerves, bones, veins, arteries etc etc etc that you'll get used to seeing in pretty textbook pictures.

I'm 39 (gulp). I Will be taking pre-req's beginning with the Spring '08 semester. I am so nervous to take classes and then not get into NS.

Good luck to all who are on this journey!

Don't let that scare you away...I thought that way too. All you can do is keep trying and you will succeed!!!

Add me to the list!! I will be 37 next month and am hoping to start NS in Jan. I have a 9 year old son (who just broke both bones in his arm last night) and an 18 year old daughter. My daughter is hoping to get inalso, so hopefully it will be the two of us together!

I was super nervous last year starting school. I wondered if all the younder students would look, point and wonder what the old lady was doing in school. Luckily that didn't happen!

Me too! I'm 36, and will be finishing up my pre-req's this fall and applying for Winter 2008 start for the ADN program. I am married and have four kids - 13, 11, 9, and 5. The hardest part was taking that first step - now I'm almost there! (I hope!). I also have a part-time job with our local hospital in the ER as a PCA/Unit Clerk (one night a week of each). I love it, and it has given me some great experience and shown me that I'm on the right path! :)

I will be 38 in April and will graduate from the ADN program at my community college in May

Oh, your poor son!!! That bites!!! Hope he heals quickly!

Oh, how great would that be if you and your daughter could take the classes together...perfect!

iill be 30 in december and am starting my pre-requesites for my bsn on august 27th. i am technically a transfer student all my classes transferred but only a&p1 and english comp 1 are my only classes that were able to be used for the nursing program. i also have a 2 1/2 yr old and a almost 5 yr old and married. i am a stay at home mom so will be able to devote my time to school and my kids

I'm 32 married with 2 year old twins and will be starting an 11 month LPN program next month. I plan on going on to an LPN to RN program after graduation.

Count me in that number, that is 41 years old :uhoh21:..I will be started Nursing school in Jan, for my RN. It is possible, heck anything is possible if you want it bad enough. I got really frustrated in my current accounting career and one day (about 3 years ago) I went into my community college,(for the first time in my life) and registered for my first class. Since then, I have completed all my pre-reqs, applied and have been accepted for Jan 08. While it has been difficult at times, it is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done(other than raising my children) Good luck to all 30-40-50 somethings.

I'm 32 and I'll be starting my pre-reqs this fall. If all goes as planned, I'll start NS in Fall 2009. I currently provide disability support services in the university setting. The job has been good to me but I've never really felt fulfilled. I've never had a passion for it so it feels like a job...something to do until I figure out what I really wanted to do.

All throughout my 20s, I researched different careers and took classes to see what I liked. I even researched nursing a couple of times but I guess I was too comfortable in my job to go after it. That is, until I reached a point where I had financially capped out and realized that I wouldn't be able to earn more unless I made a change. I reconsidered nursing. I saw how it incorporated all of my interests: health, medicine, working with people, opportunities to learn and grow. I knew that this was what I wanted. It was now or never.

I looked up the word "career" in the American Heritage Dictionary and it is defined as "a chosen pursuit; profession or occupation". I like that..."a chosen pursuit". I'm just starting on this journey but you know what, I'm excited. I'm excited about starting my classes this fall. I'm excited that there are other 30 somethings pursuing just like I am (and 40 and 50 somethings as well ;)) I'm excited about the possibilities that lie ahead of me. I haven't felt this way about anything in a long time and you know what, it feels good.

Best of luck to everybody out there and thanks for allowing me to share.

I'm 35 and starting my program in two weeks. While some of the students in our direct-entry program are young, many appear to be my age (which is comforting to see). If only there were a few more guys...
